Duties

Help
  • Instructs doctoral (PhD) and master of science (MS) students in the broad disciplines of data science and operations research as well as in the application of the current state of knowledge in the disciplines to operational problems.
  • Develops courses and sequences of courses in data science for graduate degree programs and continuing education to meet DAF dynamic educational needs.
  • Plans and executes a program of research in data science. Works directly with DAF and Department of Defense (DoD) organizations to meet research needs
  • Collaborates and works well with colleagues to accomplish individual and organizational research goals. Regularly publishes research results in high-quality archival journals and presents at technical conferences.
  • Plans, directs, coordinates, and evaluates research programs of graduate students.
  • Provides authoritative consultation in one or more areas of data science to DAF and DoD organizations.
  • Serves on department and school academic and administrative committees.
  • Mentors and manages the educational progress of graduate students. Provides annual written feedback and reports on PhD and MS students as prescribed by Air Force and AFIT Operating Instructions.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- An earned doctorate degree in applied mathematics, computer science, industrial engineering, operations research, statistics, systems engineering, or from a mathematically rigorous engineering degree program.
- The ability to communicate clearly and expertly (in English) both verbally and in writing.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated, state-of-the-art professional knowledge of foundational and advanced topics associated with data science. These areas include (but are not limited to) algorithms, artificial intelligence, data analytics, data engineering (e.g., data system architecture design, database theory and practice, and extract-transform-load design), data mining, data warehousing, machine learning, and statistics.

- At least one year of formal education and a year of research in these areas beyond the MS degree level.

This is a Tenure track position: Academic tenure is based upon performance and approval of the faculty and may be considered after the initial or subsequent 3-year period. Selectee may be offered an initial appointment with tenure if their academic credentials warrant such an action.

At the Assistant Professor Rank: For an initial appointment to the academic rank of Assistant Professor, applicants should have a strong potential for both teaching and research at the graduate level. Applicants should have a distinguished academic record and the background, commitment, and desire to teach graduate classes, conduct research, and publish.

At the Associate Professor Rank: In addition to the criteria for an Assistant Professor, an initial appointment to the academic rank of Associate Professor must be based on convincing evidence that the individual has demonstrated excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. The candidate must have 5 years of significant professional experience after having earned the doctoral degree. This will normally include no fewer than 3 years of full-time, university-level teaching at the Assistant Professor rank or higher. Alternatively, for those with fewer than 3 years of teaching experience, the requirement is 6 years of significant professional experience with research credentials normally expected of a full Professor.


At the Full Professor Rank: In addition to the criteria for an Associate Professor, an initial appointment to the academic rank of Professor must be based on convincing evidence that the faculty member has a sustained record of excellence in teaching, has produced a significant body of scholarship that is recognized nationally or internationally, and has demonstrated leadership in service to the discipline. The candidate must have a minimum of 10 years of significant professional experience after having earned the doctoral degree. This will normally include no fewer than 6 years of full-time, university-level teaching with a minimum of 3 years at the Associate Professor rank or higher. Alternatively, for those with fewer than 6 years of teaching experience, the requirement is 10 years of significant professional experience with research credentials substantially more than those normally expected of a full Professor.

EDUCATION:
You MUST provide original copies of ALL OFFICIAL transcripts for degrees being pursued or obtained (or letter of degree completion if an OFFICIAL transcript is not available due to recent graduation) to support your educational claims as stated in your curriculum vitae. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Legible photocopies of OFFICIAL transcripts are acceptable for initial application submission. However, if selected, you will be required to provide (original) copies of your OFFICIAL transcripts. For a transcript to be considered OFFICIAL, it should be printed on university letterhead and the registrar's official seal/signature must appear on the transcript. Your transcripts must also reflect the degree awarded/conferred date. Transcripts labeled UNOFFICIAL will not be accepted.

FOREIGN EDUCATION:
Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the educational requirements. However, you must show proof that the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in a conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying in the form of an "official" statement of U.S. equivalency from a Department of Education approved (non-federal) agency (i.e. AICE, NACES), who will complete a U.S. Standard of Education Conversion.

Additional information

The position will be an initial three year appointment with a one-year probationary period, with the potential for continued reappointment for additional 3-5 year terms.
