This position is located at the Produce Safety and Microbiology Research Unit, Pacific West Area, Agricultural Research Service (ARS), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), in Albany, CA. Summary
This position is located at the Produce Safety and Microbiology Research Unit, Pacific West Area, Agricultural Research Service (ARS), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), in Albany, CA. The purpose of this position is to assist in research based on microbial pathogens which have been associated with foodborne illness.
Collects, prepares, evaluates and verifies samples and supporting records.
Actively participates in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of complex technical duties, in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse environment.
Performs the full range of techniques and studies using a variety of specialized equipment.
Searches for literature pertinent to research for new procedures or techniques to use in the laboratory, field, or greenhouse.

Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.

For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting with an experiment or research project related to microbiology, plant microbiology, plant pathology or microbial molecular biology; analyzing DNA; maintaining records of scientific data; and operating or maintaining scientific equipment.

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include: Plant Pathology, Plant Microbiology, Microbiology, or Microbial Molecular Biology.

A combination of specialized experience and graduate level education as described above.

Qualifying experience for GS-08 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Physical Demands
The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring walking or bending. In many situations the duration of the activity (such as most of a workday) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. Work Environment
The work involves regular and recurring moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals or working outdoors. The employee is required to use protective clothing such as gowns, coats, boots, goggles, and gloves.
