Help

The STAA is seeking an experienced professional to serve as a Communication Analyst; supporting a range of scientists, technologists, and analysts in developing scientific and technical documents which communicate highly complex topics clearly and concisely. Responsibilities include:

- Providing advanced-level written communications consulting and tactical communications support concurrently to multiple teams or individuals working on complex or high-risk scientific or technological reviews of agencies and programs.
- Working with teams to frame research objectives and identify potential writing problems related to the study design.
- Facilitating discussions to help teams assess evidence, identify themes, and reach consensus on a message.
- Working with teams or individuals to write reports and testimonies using plain language to help communicate GAO's complex findings to a general audience.
- Reviewing and revising drafts to improve coherence, logical flow, clarity, and adherence to GAO quality and stylistic standards for audit work or other digital content.
- Checking that report findings and recommendations are supported by a sufficient level of evidence.
- Building and maintaining strong working relationships and collaborating with staff at all levels.
- Serving as a resource on clear and concise writing, and as a writing coach.
- Assists staff with improving their writing skills.

Qualifications

You must have 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the next lower band or level equivalent to the GS-11 in the federal service, or comparable private or public sector experience which has equipped you with the skills and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience for this position is defined as demonstrated experience reviewing and analyzing scientific and technical written information for stylistic and readability problems, or other issues affecting the quality of written and/or digital products; experience formulating key messages to segmented audiences; and experience developing and executing specific tactics in support of an overall communications plan.

The desired candidate will have experience publishing written materials in credible scientific and technical journals, media outlets, major association publications, or scientific and technical related Inspector General's offices.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
