Summary

Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) is an emerging technology area that will have an impact on all NASA Missions. ICME is recognized as a key element of the Division's newly adopted Revolutionary Structures and Materials R&D Strategy and Vision 2040. LMS's Branch expertise in structural mechanics, multiscale modeling and data management of materials have provided it a leadership role in ICME initiatives within the LM Division at Glenn Research Center and across the agency.

  • Duties described below are at the full-performance level. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in structural mechanics modeling.
  • Perform multiscale modeling of composite material behavior.
  • Apply Data Analytics and Machine Learning to enable Integrated Computational Material Engineering (ICME) work to be conducted.
  • Perform material database management activities to assist in the capture, analysis, dissemination, and maintenance of material information.
  • Demonstrate research competencies by performing research work, writing conference and journal papers, and making presentations of the work.
  • Collaborate with experimentalist, material development, constitutive modeling, or structural design personnel to support a wide range of materials and structural technologies to current and future NASA Exploration design and analysis needs.
  • Conduct ICME research utilizing data driven or physics-based multidisciplinary, multiscale, and multiphysics design and analysis tools to identify and develop new fit-for-purpose materials for aerospace applications.
  • Collaborate with material, mechanics of materials, structural designers and information management subject matter experts to develop, apply and maintain multiscale digital twin(s) and the digital thread throughout the engineering/research process.

Qualifications

In addition to the basic education requirement (shown below), you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify at the GS-12 level, you must have:
a) One year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level; conducting research in multiscale modeling or structural mechanics areas; applying principles, associated with material or structural applications, ­­­­­­­­in one of the following areas: data analytics, machine learning, information management, digital twin, or digital thread; utilizing communication skills by authoring technical papers and conducting presentations on your work.
OR
b) Completed or will complete all requirements for a doctoral degree (i.e., Ph.D. or equivalent) in an appropriate field by June 30, 2022.

Required college majors for applicants qualifying on the basis of graduate education only (GS-12 research):

Materials: Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering.
Other majors will qualify if the major includes or is supplemented as follows: Ceramics or Ceramics Engineering (with 12 semester hours in refractory ceramics, cermets or protective coatings); Civil Engineering, Computer Science, or Geology (with 12 semester hours in strength of materials, structures, thermodynamics, and/or basic static and dynamics); Metallurgy or Metallurgical Engineering (with 12 semester hours in physical or adaptive metallurgy, high temperature metals and alloys, cermets); Mathematics or Nuclear Engineering (with nine semester hours in physics, structures, materials or other appropriate courses). Other appropriate physical science or engineering fields may qualify with appropriate supplemental courses.

Education

By June 30, 2022, you must have successfully completed a bachelor's or graduate degree with a major in either a) engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science*, or other field of physical science.
*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
