This Food Service Worker position is located at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The position is assigned to the Production Unit of Food Service Operations within Nutrition and Food Services (NFS). Incumbent's primary duties and responsibilities are in the Ingredient Control Room (ICR) in support of Food Production. Incumbent has a working knowledge of methods and procedures for small quantity food preparation, a full range of simple cooking experience and have knowledge of regular and complex modified diets, quality control, food safety, HACCP, infection control and department policies/procedures.
Major Duties:

  • Weighs, measures, counts out, arranges and labels/dates ingredients for standardized recipes.
  • Checks condition of perishable items to prevent food spoilage and loss.
  • Transports items from Ingredient Control Room (ICR) to food production and food service units.
  • Utilizes a computer terminal to record and retrieve recipes, menu, and inventory data.
  • Uses appropriate sanitation and safety procedures.
  • Assembles and prepares bulk nourishment.
  • Prepares menu items that require little or no processing such as milkshakes, fruit servings, toast, simple salads and similar items.
  • Portions and measures items as needed for specified yields and recipe staging.
  • Produces printed reports and recipes for various work units in the kitchen.
  • Assists daily with receiving food and supply deliveries.
  • Checks in deliveries for accuracy of quantity and quality of items received.
  • Stores items correctly, rotating stock to prevent spoilage, and by expiration date.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

For the Food Service Worker position, your background must demonstrate knowledge and experience in a variety of duties such as proficiency in special food storage, safety and sanitation procedures and a broad knowledge of food service and food production operations such as food preparation and serving. Experience utilizing computer terminal and inventory management systems, making arithmetical computation in order to increase/decrease or convert ingredients, food stock labeling, expiration coding and dating, assisting in food recalls, prioritizing tasks based on food safety and patient needs, checking online food ordering system, handling food under sanitary conditions to prevent cross contamination, and understanding of food/drug interactions and food allergens.


EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent must be able to adjust to alternating shifts. Work requires frequent and/or continuous lifting, carrying, moving, and pushing heavy items up to 50 pounds, unassisted, and occasionally lift or move objects weighing over 40 pounds with assistance of lifting devices or other workers. Items may include cases of supplies, heavy carts (up to 400 pounds) and filled garbage cans, among others. The employee sweeps, vacuums, and spot mops floors as assigned, and may be required to use powered cleaning equipment; works with a variety of cleaning compounds, chemicals and detergents. Work requires continuous walking, standing, bending, lifting, stooping and reaching. Work performed in assigned kitchen area include high heat and humidity conditions at times related to cooking and ware washing equipment. Exposure to temperature extremes; periodically exposed to freezer temperatures of -10 degrees F. The work area is well lit. The employee is regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces. Workers are exposed to minor cuts, bruises, burns and scalds. There is danger of slipping on floors that are wet from daily mopping or where food and beverages have been dropped. Worker is subject to daily reassignment as necessitated by emergencies. Incumbent may be required to wear personal protective equipment such as masks, gowns, gloves, earplugs, goggles, beard snoods and freezer coats when necessary. Clothing and dress must meet sanitation and safety standards.
