Duties

Help
  • You will serve as the education and outreach coordinator for UAB, leading the Branch?s academic internship program coordination, and developing applicable outreach products.
  • You will be engaging with the public and the Fleet, and liaising with the Command?s Communication and Outreach Division.
  • You will serve as a lead historical and archival researcher in support of incoming Requests for Information, site discoveries, archaeological permit requests, and emergent issues related to sunken and terrestrial military craft.
  • You will serve as a key researcher addressing the interpretation and management of historic aircraft under the Navy?s purview.
  • You will serve as a field investigator, engaging in the planning and execution of all phases of maritime archaeological research projects associated with U.S. Navy ship and aircraft wrecks.
  • You will support Branch administrative functions through engaging in data organization, preparing reports and briefs, as well as supporting procurement, testing, and implementation of equipment, supplies, and tools.
  • You may have the opportunity to complete a U.S. Navy Dive Physical and to undergo training in order to meet physical screening test requirements stipulated in MILPERSMAN 1220-400 in preparation to pass the U.S. Navy Dive School Scuba Course.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-09) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing most or all of the following duties: (1) Applying the theory and methods of archaeology, as well as professional standards, principles, and ethics, with a focus on maritime archaeology, archaeological conservation, and submerged cultural resource management; (2) Leading and coordinating staff, volunteers, or interns engaged in researching, managing, or supporting outreach activities associated with maritime archaeological resources; (3) Independently engaging in or coordinating historical research associated with naval history, ship construction, aviation or U.S. Navy sunken and terrestrial military craft; (4) Applying scientific analytical techniques to collect and interpret archaeological data, with a focus on underwater archaeological diving and remote sensing tools and equipment, applied underwater survey and excavation methodology, GIS development and maintenance, and data dissemination; (5) Coordinating outreach efforts associated with the research and management of maritime cultural resources, including developing outreach products, public/stakeholder engagement, and responding to external requests for information; and (6) Implementing policy and cultural resource management strategies associated with submerged cultural resources, consistent with relevant statutes and regulations.


This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The selective placement factor is:
The candidate must possess experience directly related to maritime cultural resources (shipwrecks and aircraft wrecks). This would be evidenced by engaging and leading others engaged in outreach and archival research activities, conducting archaeological fieldwork, management of maritime cultural resources, and training and experience that meets the Secretary of the Interior Standards and Guidelines for Archeology and Historic Preservation professional standards for Archeology.

Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess


A. Education

1. Degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas:

  • History of archeology.
  • Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa.
  • Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development.
  • Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques.
  • Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work.

AND
  • Six semester hours of related course work in:
    • geography, geology, or cultural geography;
    • history, historiography, or historical archeology;
    • environmental studies;
    • scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or
    • surveying;
AND
  • Archeological field school

2. Related Curriculum: degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A.1 (including archeological field school).

B. Combination of Education and Experience

College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education.

C. Experience

Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.
