Duties

Help
  • Provides customer service to patrons and performs Manager on Duty tasks.
  • Maintains equipment and facility.
  • Completes financial paperwork, performs inspections and completes reports.
  • Demonstrates to facility patrons, the proper use of exercise equipment and other activities within the Fitness Center with various fitness programs and activities.
  • Performs resale operation duties.
  • Cleans and maintains all of the areas in the Fitness facility not cleaned and maintained by contract cleaners and performs laundry duties.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions, Recreation Assistant, Series 0189.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:: Applicants must have six months of general experience which includes (1) any type of work which demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position AND six months of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-03 grade level which include: Experience as a group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; teacher's aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities; aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service; aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities; summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children); sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop; aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility; or aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities.

EDUCATION:
2 years of successful completion of education above high school that includes at least 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, arts and crafts, etc.). NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts.

FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-­grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-03 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-04 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of principles and techniques of recreations. Knowledge of and the ability to apply unit fire, safety, and building security regulations.
2. Knowledge of and ability to interpret Air Force Instructions, DoD/MAJCOM directives, local policies and various regulations, practices, and procedures. Knowledge of the assigned equipment within the fitness center, how it functions, and required safety rules and regulations.
3. Knowledge of clerical procedures and ability to accurately complete, review and maintain records. Knowledge of the methods involved with fitness and sports programs.
4. Ability to contend with a range of problems common to a fitness and sports environment. Ability to establish effective working relationships with others.
5. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
6. Skill in cash handling procedures.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
