Duties

Help

These include but are not limited to: Receives and processes prescription refill requests through the computer system for disposition. Collates reorder documents as they are printed. Issues medication to patients and responsible third parties. Maintains files of dispensing records. Utilizes knowledge of the computer system, printer operation, and organizational skills to facilitate the dispensing process. Accurately fills prescriptions and medication orders by selecting, packaging, and labeling the correct and proper drug and dosage. Documents all quality assurance information on the dispensing record. Provides medications, IV preparations, missing doses for "stat" or "now" conditions. Utilizes knowledge of automated devices, quality assurance requirements and team approach to fill prescriptions and medication orders in accordance with the facility's customer service standards.

Accurately fills patient unit dose carts independently or as a team utilizing order copies and or pick lists. Reviews and coordinates orders and pick lists to provide proper dosage, making corrections as required. Inputs, updates, and edits pick lists to ensure accurate dispensing records. Utilizes knowledge of computer system, printer operation and pre-packing or automated dispensing machinery. Packages medications and supplies for mailing or transfer to other sites, observing special considerations required for controlled substances and cytotoxic preparations. Takes precautions to ensure only medications for addressee are included in the package. Includes any correspondence intended for the patient. Independently fills and maintains levels in the automated dispensing machines (Ex. Script Pro, Pyxis, Robot Rx, etc.). Maintains inventory balance with potentially out-of-date drugs. Adjusts the flow of inventory to correspond with CMOP dispensing.

Maintains ward stock and pyxis inventories. Maintains unit dose cart inventories. Conducts and documents monthly ward inspections and monitors for expiration dates of all stock. Inventories, stocks, seals and documents emergency cart medications. Reports shortages and out of stock conditions as discovered. Inspects pharmacy stock for expiration dates. Replaces barcode scanner tags for individual products as necessary. Inventories stock and supplies needed for pre-packaging.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 08:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Includes Rotating Holidays.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Education or Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.

Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.

Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.

English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English.

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

GS-06 - Grade Determinations:

Certification: PTCB certification is required at this grade level and above.

Experience: One-year experience at the next lower level and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level.

In addition - The candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs:

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. A. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational
  2. problems and refer for appropriate action.
  3. B. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.
  4. C. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic
  5. technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.
  6. D. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine
  7. sterile products.
  8. E. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas
  9. such as emergency carts.
  10. F. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to
  11. input prescriptions and medication orders.
Assignments: Pharmacy technicians may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments; for example assignment as team leaders for specific process improvement teams involving technical areas or performing more highly complex duties including preparation of oncology agents for clinical pharmacy specialists. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.
