Help

  • The maintenance mechanic must be skilled and knowledgeable in commercial institutional work at a journeyman level working with wood, metal, plastic, and other related crafts. Skills will include measuring, cutting, repairing, and replacing known components with accuracy and fit to insure the work is installed with serviceable results and good appearance.
  • The journeyman level carpentry skills required as a maintenance mechanic will include sheet rocking, installing metal grid, suspended ceilings, installation of plaster lath, replacement of built-up and shingle roofing, installation of metal/wood windows, doors and frames, floor and ceiling tile, repair wood flooring, joists, etc. Mechanic must be able to install carpet, cove base, seamless flooring, pour concrete slabs and sidewalks, etc. Journeyman skills will also require building wood equipment and cabinetry.
  • The incumbent must be skilled and knowledgeable in sheet metal bending and will be required to repair both clinical and ward equipment, including wood/metal furniture, lockers, beds, stretchers, etc. lncumbent's duties require soldering, brazing, welding and cutting of both pipe and equipment.
  • The incumbent must be proficient in using a backhoe/front end loader, trenching machine, and forklift.
  • The mechanic will be required to work on the basic components of the hospital plumbing system, repair faucets, sinks, commodes, sewer and water lines, and fire hydrants and valves.
  • The mechanic will at times be required to disconnect electrical boxes, lights, switches, etc. and minor painting on projects.
  • The maintenance mechanic must become proficient in reading blueprints, using and interpreting a variety of specifications, drawings, sketches, and notes. He must have and utilize a thorough knowledge of basic shop mechanics. Applications usually involve routine and standard instruction templates, samples, and replacement items. The worker must continually and actively maintain a current knowledge by keeping abreast of new techniques and equipment.
  • The employee uses all the hand tools common to the carpenter/plumbing/machine shop trades and a variety of hand tools which will include: saws, drills, presses, metal breaks, grinders, etc. The incumbent will practice good operations care and maintenance of the equipment, including minor adjustments and preventive maintenance. The employee brings tools, equipment, and materials appropriate to the work assignment. He will keep the shop equipment and work area clear, secure, and orderly. He observes safe practices and properly disposes of waste and debris.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Heavy Lifting over 45 lbs, moderate carrying 15-44 lbs, pulling hand over hand, pushing, reaching over shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, repeated bending, climbing legs hands and arms, operating a crane/truck/tractor/motor vehicle, near vision correctable 13" t0 16", far vision correctable to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, hearing aid permitted.
