The incumbent serves as Biological Science Laboratory Technician at a laboratory or work unit within Plant Protection and Quarantine, Science and Technology (PPQ S&T) and is responsible for carrying out complex task, analyses, evaluations, studies, and diagnostics using a variety of sophisticated technologies in support of scientific studies.

The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity. The duties may include, but are not limited to:
Applying the principles of entomology with regards to regulatory/phytosanitary science.
Applying the principles of biological control to manage insect pests.
Using sampling methods to identify insect species and life stages, quantify abundance, distribution, and insect-related damage assessments used in biological control and integrated pest management.
Using taxonomic keys and working with Orthoptera.
Collecting, data quality control, and electronically storing data on insect life stages and life history traits.
Data collection for research studies, statistical analysis, data summary statistics, and reporting
Establishing experimental field plots, and study sites in natural ecosystems.
Field work in natural ecosystems for extended periods of time

Testing Designated Position: Selectee must submit to a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and random testing thereafter. Final appointment and continued employment is conditional on negative results for illegal drug use.

Incumbent may be required to do field work on a daily bases or for extended periods of time.

Incumbent may be required to obtain PPQ Pesticide Applicator Training and/or training to apply fumigants requiring SCBA.
Qualifications

FOR THE GS-07 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-06 grade level) that demonstrates:
Experience in applying the principles of entomology with regards to regulatory/phytosanitary science, including - the principles of biological control to manage insect pests.
Experience in using sampling methods to identify insect species and life stages, quantify abundance, distribution, and insect-related damage assessments used in biological control and integrated pest management.
Experience using taxonomic keys and working with Orthoptera.
Experience in collecting, data quality control, and electronically storing data on insect life stages and life history traits.
Experience with data collection devices, such as GPS and weather recording instruments that demonstrate knowledge of data collection methods used in research studies, statistical analysis, data summary statistics, and reporting.
Experience with field work in natural ecosystems for extended periods of time that include establishing experimental field plots, and study sites in natural ecosystems.
OR Successful completion of 18 semester hours of graduate level education or internship in biology, chemistry, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, or agriculture, or in a field directly related to the position, may be substituted for the specialized experience at the GS-7 level.
