Duties

Help

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Identifies the needs of residents and performs a range of personal nursing care duties which include feeding, bathing, oral hygiene, nail care, hair care, and related personal hygiene duties.
  • Application and care of external catheter.
  • Provides post-mortem care.
  • Utilizes proper body mechanics to move, lift and transfer residents.
  • Makes beds.
  • Answers resident's calls expediently.
  • Assists and/or escorts selected residents by minibus, car and ambulance to and from hospital, Community Living Centers, etc.
  • Assists residents in use of ADL devices.
  • Provides indwelling catheter care according to procedure.
  • Assists with orientation of new residents to the house and inspects their personal belonging in accordance with Medical Center Memorandum as directed by the professional nurse.
  • Performs enteral tube feedings (gastrostomy tube and naso-gastric tube feedings.)
  • Gives individual care and attention to residents with multiple complex problems.
  • Demonstrates support of individual resident choices, dignity, autonomy and preferred routines. (for example allows resident to choose preferred bathing time, bedtime, clothing to wear)
  • Encourages residents to increase their physical and emotional independence by giving, directing, instructing and supervising them in their care.
  • Participates in developing the plan of care for individual residents during team conferences.
  • Offers emotional support to the dying resident and/or family members.
Work Schedule: Rotating Shifts - The selectee's tour of duty and duty location may be subject to change once COVID recovery is met.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Completion of one year above high school with courses related to the occupation or completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant.
  • Proficient in both spoken and written English.
Preferred Experience: Nursing Assistant Certification preferred but not required.

Grade Determinations:

GS-3: Experience There is no additional experience required beyond the basic qualifications. This is an entry level position. One year above high school with courses related to the NA occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year.

GS-4: Experience One year of specialized experience as a NA or experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, health technician, hospital corpsman, etc.), performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional states, therapeutic communication, and technical skills required for basic and intermediate treatments; or education with successful completion of 2 years above high school in an accredited institution with courses related to nursing care, health care or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technicians.

GS-5: Experience (full Performance Level) One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific NA assignment; or education that results in successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree; and the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSA's listed below. 1. Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse.2. Ability to communicate orally with patients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new CNAs by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting.3. Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.

Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over; Straight pulling (4 hours); Pulling hand over hand (4 hours); Pushing (4 hours); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (8 hour); Standing (8 hours); Repeated bending (4 hours); Both legs required *one leg or foot may be Compensated by prosthesis; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Hearing (aid permitted); Hearing without aid; Emotional stability under stress; Ability to read with one eye and ability to read typewritten material, glasses permitted.

Education

Education:

  • Must have completed one year above high school with courses related to the occupation; OR
  • Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant
