Duties

Help
  • Works with the supervisor, using available resources, to plan and develop a series of education programs.
  • Recommends the development of new educational programs.
  • Manages the registration process for education programs.
  • Manage educational programs relating to the gardens, plant collections, research, activities, and mission of the U.S. National Arboretum.
  • Manages all aspects of publicity and marketing for education program offerings.
  • Observes and evaluates effectiveness and reception of the program.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements:

Degree: that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position.

OR

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described in A above.

AND
In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised.

GS-9:
Qualifying experience for GS-9 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-7 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting with developing educational programs; participating in the publicity and marketing of educational programs; and assisting with planning and coordinating speakers and space for educational programs or events.

OR

Education: Two (2) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree if related. Related degrees may include Education, Environmental Science, Biology, Botany, Horticulture or Communications.

OR

An appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education directly related to the work of the position.

GS-11:
Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-9 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience developing educational programs; managing the publicity and marketing of educational programs; planning and coordinating speakers and space for educational programs or events; and developing course descriptions.

OR

Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree. Related degrees may include Education, Environmental Science, Biology, Botany, Horticulture or Communications.

OR

An appropriate combination of specialized experience and Ph.D level education directly related to the work of the position as stated above.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified.
