Summary

The Mars Sample Return Program within the Science Mission Directorate (SMD) at NASA Headquarters (HQ) in Washington, DC is seeking engineers highly experienced in management and execution of agency aerospace programs to serve as Program Executives. The Mars Sample Return Program is one of the most complex, challenging, and impactful robotic spaceflight programs in the history of the Agency, with work being performed at several NASA Field Centers.

Help
  • Leads implementation and execution of program engineering program/project planning, management, tracking, and reporting tasks for the development of spacecraft, instruments, and ground systems, including technology development activities.
  • Provides management insight in the analysis, forecasting, and integration, including earned value management and risk management, related to space flight and ground system development programs.
  • Performs management planning duties such as concept development, master integration planning, and programming design for programs or projects taking into account technical and programmatic feasibility and agency/partner strategic goals/objectives.
  • Collaborates within HQ, field centers, commercial industry, and partner organizations both domestically and internationally to ensure the successful development, integration and test, launch, and on-orbit commissioning of spaceflight elements.
  • Establishes metrics, monitors and reports on execution of processes and plans.
  • Fulfills SMD Program Executive duties and responsibilities.

Qualifications

In addition to the basic education requirement (shown below), you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for GS-15, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level such as; leading flight project processes/deliverables during the implementation/development phase; executing flight project development programs/projects with management/development processes for flight project/program lifecycle evaluation and management; overseeing and monitoring of contractor performance for acquisition of flight project/program elements, systems, and/or subsystems.

Education

You must have successfully completed a bachelor's or graduate degree with a major in either a) engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science*, or other field of physical science.
*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
