This position is located in the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Office of Communications (OC), Media Relations Group (MRG).

As a Supervisory Media Relations Officer, GS-0301-15, you will serve as a key member of MRG's executive leadership team as one of two Deputy Group Directors, spearheading external affairs efforts, both tactically and strategically, on behalf of CMS' media relations program.

  • In partnership with the MRG Director and the Deputy Director for Media Relations, MRG, the incumbent oversees ongoing operations of the Group.
  • Plan public affairs strategies on all CMS actions and programs and advises on all matters affecting public information which involve working with or through the news media.
  • Give guidance to CMS senior officials, Center and Office Directors, CMS Staff and Regional Administrators on matters involving the news media, in regard to controversial implications of materials.
  • Along with the MRG Director, and the Deputy Director for Media Relations, MRG, serves as primary focal point for liaison with CMS regional offices on press and media issues.
  • Plan external affairs strategies on all CMS actions and programs and advises on all matters affecting public information which involve working with or through the news media.

In order to qualify for the GS-15, you must meet the following: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one year (52 weeks) of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal government, obtained in either the private or public sector, to include: 1) planning, coordinating, implementing, or evaluating media strategy and outreach, including press releases, fact sheets, talking points, blogs or news-related material; 2) advising or briefing the media, senior officials, or key stakeholders on health care issues; 3) conceiving and implementing an office's processes; and 4) mentoring and coaching junior staff on public affairs activities or the organization's operating policies or procedures.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
