Summary

The Recreation Assistant is responsible for organizing and administering a conventional basic recreational and physical fitness program or segments of an entire program. You will provide leadership and guidance to students in a variety of group recreational and physical fitness activities.

Duties

Help
  • Provides on-site recreational activities to students with various skill levels and backgrounds.
  • Ensures a safe, healthy atmosphere for all students during recreational and physical fitness activities.
  • Ensures that self-directed activities are carried out in accordance with the recreational plans.
  • Identifies and makes changes in processes and/or procedures to ensure full participation by all students.
  • Schedule, coordinate, and supervise recurring group activities such as basketball, volleyball, softball. Makes reservations, acquires transportation, and other related arrangements and provides information on activities based on program plans.
  • Meets individually with students to discuss day-to-day problems encountered in recreational and physical fitness activities. Gives practical advise and counsel to students and proposes solutions to routine problems without imposing personal values.
  • Serves as lifeguard and water safety instructor.
  • Properly prepares facilities, including needed equipment and supplies are on hand for scheduled activities.
  • Makes sure that facilities are set-up for physical activities.
  • Ensures compliance with and enforcement of all safety rules and regulations.
  • Submits monthly recreation and other reports as required.
  • Operates government vehicles to transport students to and from off-site activities. This may include operating buses with air brakes.

  • Employees for this position will be required to submit to a urinalysis on an ongoing random basis, after appointment as directed.

Basic Requirement:
GS-0189 - Recreation Assistant - Specialized Experience required to qualify for this position includes:

  • Group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, WYCA and WMCA clubs, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities.
  • Teacher's aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities.
  • Aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service.
  • Aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities, calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities.
  • Summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children).
  • Sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop.
  • Aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility.
  • Aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas of games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities.
OR

Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.

Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GS-05: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as the majority of the following: Performing administrative duties in support of a recreational program, such as making reservations, acquiring transportation, and other related arrangements; providing information concerning physical education and recreational activities; assisting with offsite recreational activities; ensuring compliance with safety rules and regulations pertaining to physical/recreational activities; ensuring recreational equipment is operated in a safe manner; demonstrating recreational equipment and tools. OR Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with majority study or at lease 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education..

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
