Duties

Help
  • Translates census materials from English into Spanish for the enumeration of Puerto Rico and Spanish-speakers in the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
  • Translates and edits/reviews translations from Spanish and into English at all levels of difficulty for a wide variety of census materials/products and public use material.
  • Reviews and edits the translations of other translators and/or contract translators and provides assistance in addressing uncommon or complex issues or situations. May be assigned to mentor less experienced translators.
  • Conducts research on census terminology, style, background information and sources of terminological reference to assist in the resolution of unusual problems.
  • Consults with subject matter specialists or the supervisor to verify the meaning of technical terms and the general sense of accuracy of the translated material.
  • Knowledge of SDL Trados

Relocation expenses will be paid

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and individual states being in different in different phases of reopening, once the selectee becomes an employee, the report date to the official duty station/facility may be delayed until such time that management notifies the employee of their requirement to report. Until it is safe to relocate, the employee may be approved to telework to the maximum extent possible, up to and including full-time.

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factor: You must demonstrate full-time or equivalent experience working as a professional translator for 3 or more years (and/or an advanced translation degree) for the following language combination: English into Spanish (this requirement must be supported in the submitted resume)." 

Specialized Experience: For the GS-12, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes: working as a professional translator from English into Spanish, translating surveys and survey materials, working as a staff senior translator (or editor/reviewer), working as a member of a translation team reviewing or editing translations, working with technical subject matter experts to document terminology, researching terminology, and experience using SDL Trados or a similar tool to complete translations. 

Education cannot be substituted for experience at this grade level. 

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

  • Knowledge of both Spanish and English sufficient to render translations with correct grammar, syntax, and spelling and utilize a wide variety of technical and nontechnical vocabularies and a wide range of nonstandard terminology.
  • Knowledge of how to properly document and review translation errors and provide feedback to less experienced translators
  • Knowledge of translation related to survey materials sufficient to accurately identify potential translation challenges in survey translation and suggest appropriate solutions.
  • Ability to research and formally document terminology for concept-based equivalency in another language.
  • Ability to work effectively with technical subject matter experts to understand and document terminology.
  • Ability to work effectively as a translator with SDL Trados
