As an Economist in the Policy, Research and Analysis Department you will:

  • Design and conduct special reviews, studies, and analysis of potential future outcomes for the financial condition of PBGC and the defined benefit pension system, including analysis of any important economic, policy and legislative factors affecting those outcomes.
  • Plan, conduct research, and prepare significant economic data analysis and recommendations on both PBGC focused topics as well as policy initiatives that may encompass broader retirement income issues.
  • Participate in meetings with senior level PBGC officials, Congressional staff, other federal agencies, and members of the pension community to provide economic and pension plan analysis, data and statistics.

Qualifications

All qualification and eligibility requirements must be met by the announcement closing date.

You may start at the GS-13 grade level with an annual salary of $103,690, if you meet the following minimum qualification requirements in addition to the education requirement below:

Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the private sector conducting economic and financial research, studies and analyses related to pension benefits. Examples may include designing, developing, maintaining and enhancing computer based financial forecasting models.

You may start at the GS-14 grade level with an annual salary of $122,530, if you meet the following minimum qualification requirements in addition to the education requirement below:

Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the private sector using original research, current economic theory and current statistical and econometric methods to analyze current policy, legislative and regulatory issues.  Examples may include relevant Internal Revenue Code, and policy issues related to defined benefit plan financial accounting and disclosure.

Series Qualifications:

In order to qualify for the GS-0110 series, you must have one of the following: 

A.  Degree: economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus.

OR

B.  Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

All academic degrees and coursework must be completed at a college or university that has obtained accreditation or pre-accreditation status from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools that meet this criteria, see www.ed.gov.

**Experience with stochastic projection models and familiarity with econometrics relating to defined benefit pension plans is highly desirable.**
