Summary

This position is located within the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, National Sedimentation Laboratory, Watershed Physical Processes Research Unit in Oxford, Mississippi.

The incumbent provides direct professional support to integrate existing hydrological and related databases and identify and implement procedures for analysis of hydrology, topography, vegetation, and soil data in agroecosystems at landscape to regional and national levels.

Duties

Help
  • Assists in the management of the quality and accessibility of hydrological and related data produced by long-term environmental and ecological research efforts.
  • Provides assistance in organizing, reviewing and locating, a wide variety of hydrological, biophysical, ecological, and geographical information across various scales.
  • Applies established technology in routine ways to well-defined, moderate sized projects, works in support of larger projects using less established technology.
  • Designs web pages in consultation with scientists to communicate complex scientific results and make data products available to users ranging from other scientists to land managers to the interested public.
  • Coordinates and implements data life cycle activities, including the development of project objectives, evaluation of the adequacy of existing data sources, creation and modification of hydrologic and related databases.
  • Coordinates data acquisition, organization, and storage with the team having oversight over unit computer and network operations.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements:

Degree: Physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours in physics. Calculus and physics, as described above, are requirements for all grade levels.

OR

Combination of education and experience: Course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND
In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting with identifying or managing hydrology, topography, vegetation, or soil data; and assisting with developing web-based content, visualizations, databases or applications related to science.

OR

2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to master's degree, or master's or equivalent graduate degree, if related. Related degrees may include hydrology, engineering sciences, mathematics, or atmospheric sciences.

OR

A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above.


At the GS-11:
Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience identifying, managing, or analyzing hydrology, topography, vegetation, or soil data; developing web-based content, visualizations, databases or applications related to science; and writing scripts to assist with data entry, basic QA/QC, or automating processes.


OR

3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, if related. Related degrees may include hydrology, engineering sciences, mathematics, or atmospheric sciences.

OR

A combination of Ph.D. education and specialized experience as described above.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
