Duties

Help
  • Serves as KSC Chief of Aircraft Flight Operations. Plans, directs, and coordinates all aspects of the Center's flight operations. Provides UAS regulatory flight oversight to Stennis Space Center, Marshall Space Flight Center, and other Centers.
  • Serves as senior line manager with authority over all flight activities, to include manned and unmanned aerial systems, Airbus EC135 helicopters, and transient visitor aircraft.
  • Performs aircraft flight operations for advanced multi-engine aircraft, maintenance, and maintenance test flight procedures for KSC, SSC and MSFC flight operations in accordance with NASA, KSC, SSC, MSFC, FAA, NTSB, OSHA, and DOD requirements.
  • Serves as the overall safety manager of all aviation activities operating under KSC authority. Serves as the Contract Officer Representative for the Kennedy aircraft maintenance and pilot support contract.
  • Pilots EC135 helicopters under day, night, NVG, and IFR conditions. Conducts flight briefings, develops operational procedures, and exercises aviation authority and safety responsibility in evaluating pilot readiness to support NASA missions.
  • Serves as the Exploration Ground Systems (EGS) Air Operations Coordinator responsible for planning, integrating, implementation, leadership of critical air operations support during Orion Crew Module descent, landing and EGS led recovery operations.

  • At the time of initial appointment, you must possess a current FAA first class medical certificate or a military pilot flight physical; or you must obtain a NASA flight medical certification
  • This is a bargaining unit position - American Federation of Government Employees -Local 513

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must possess:

1. A current Federal Aviation Administration commercial pilot's license with an instrument rating or a pilot and instrument rating from the armed services.

2. A minimum of the following flight time hours:
a. 1,500 hours of flight time as pilot-in-command or co-pilot in aircraft of any weight or category, and;
b. 250 hours pilot-in-command in the rotorcraft-helicopter category, and;
c. 75 hours of night flying, and;
d. 100 hours of flight time in the preceding 12 months.

3. One year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level that includes: Expert knowledge and skill in operating aircraft and conducting flight-related briefings and procedures in exercising aviation authority and safety responsibility in evaluating readiness to support NASA missions and compliance with applicable NASA, FAA, and OSHA directives.
