Summary

The Avionics and Instrumentation Branch at Armstrong Flight Research Center is seeking an Aerospace Technician who is skilled at developing, testing, and performing work on all familiar and unfamiliar airborne electronic equipment by applying knowledge of theory, circuit design, and the operating characteristics of equipment. This position is expected to maintain, modify, troubleshoot, repair, install, and test systems with outdated or limited documentation in performance of their duties.

  • Duties described below are at the full-performance level. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.
  • Analyze repair practices and develop procedural instructions to be used by others on methods and steps to repair and modify electronic equipment on aircraft or on airworthy components.
  • Plan and perform the modification, maintenance, installation of complex and unique systems on UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) or manned aircraft; collaborating with partners, contractors, and researchers from other organizations who modify equipment.
  • Design and analyze circuits, determining design feasibility, evaluating equipment performance under varying environmental conditions, and collect relevant performance data.
  • Complete testing, evaluate data, and determine acceptability of equipment modifications, validity, test procedures and data, and/or legality of operation.
  • Support professional engineers in performing experiments, research, and development activities requiring an in-depth knowledge of technical engineering methods, applications, practices, and principles to work on concepts, and experimental projects.
  • Perform complex calculations and manipulations of test data to improve performance of systems, instrumentation, measurement standards, techniques, and procedures.
  • Analyze and diagnose faults in the operational configuration of electronic systems and equipment.
  • Evaluate the adequacy of equipment for repair, calibration, and testing.

  • Position will require working from elevated surfaces, in confined spaces and extreme weather conditions, in areas with poor lighting, require lifting up to 50 lbs. unassisted, being stationary for long periods, etc.
  • This position requires the selectee to have the following current License and/or Certification: obtain and maintain a valid state drivers license, CPR, and vision per NASA-STD-8739.6.
  • This position requires the selectee to have successfully completed a Class 3 Flight Physical.
  • You must have received a qualifying degree on or before August 31, 2021 to meet the education requirements for this position.

Qualifications

To qualify for GS-09, you must have:
a) One year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 level in the Federal service that includes using maintenance standards and procedures for aircraft, basic application of electronics and aircraft knowledge to install, modify, service, troubleshoot, and maintain avionics, instrumentation, research and modified systems on aircraft.
OR
b) Completed all requirements for a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or a related field.
OR
c) Completed at least 2 full academic years of graduate education in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or a related field.
OR
d) An equivalent combination of experience and graduate education

To qualify for GS-10, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service that includes applying maintenance standards and procedures for aircraft, analyzing repair practices and assists with the development of procedural instructions on methods and steps to repair aircraft electrical and electronics systems; and assists with calibrations, installation and limited preparation of instrument systems.

To qualify for GS-11, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-10 level in the Federal service that includes assisting in the development of maintenance standards and procedures; analyzing repair practices and developing procedural instructions on methods and steps to repair equipment; repairing aircraft electrical and electronics systems; installing, servicing, troubleshooting, and maintaining avionics systems on modified aircraft; designing and fabrication of research instruments, test devices, prototype components; analyzes, finds solutions to problems and responds to inquiries from various customer sources.
