Duties

Help
  • Edit and maintain geospatial data. Complete analysis using standard methods and tools. Produce cartographic mapping products.
  • Work actively to bring consistency to all geospatial data. Assist in development of standards and applications. Assist facilitation of sharing and distribution of data.
  • Work with diverse group of resource specialist, planners, and manager coordinating and implementing GIS activities and projects.
  • Assist in integration of Enterprise GIS with the long and short term planning and management activities.
  • Provide technical user support. Development and/or deployment of standardized training activities.

Qualifications

To qualify for the GS-9 level:
You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: identifying data needs for specific projects, determining compatibility with other platforms, and locating missing information; Digitizing geographic information by translating raw land-based data into code. Identifying basic interrelationships within data and applies layers of geographic data to produce spatial analysis and derivative maps to promote effective and economical management of natural resources. Reconciling coding errors and resolves recurring technical problems. Analyzing cumulative impacts of frequently measured environmental factors and conducts basic 3D/spatial analysis and geospatial modeling to analyze resource distribution and behavior. Conducting research to locate and obtain information from existing databases. Compiling geographic data from a variety of sources. Providing technical user support and troubleshooting assistance for recurring problems related to GIS hardware and application software. Assists in implementing an integrated training program to teach basic skills in the use of geospatial software, data acquisition, retrieval and analysis, in order to meet local needs.

Education: Have a Master or equivalent graduate degree or two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., in a major in any field that provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do GIS work such as: Geographic Information Systems, Cartography, Geomatics, Photogrammetry.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

To qualify for the GS-11 level:
You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: editing and maintaining geospatial data, completing analysis using standard methods and tools, producing cartographic mapping products, assisting in development of standards and applications, assisting in the facilitation of sharing and distribution of data, working with a diverse group of resource specialists, planners, and managers coordinating and implementing GIS activities and projects, assisting in the integration of Enterprise GIS with the long and short term planning and management activities.

Education: Have a PhD or equivalent graduate degree or three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., in a major in any field that provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do GIS work such as: Geographic Information Systems, Cartography, Geomatics, Photogrammetry.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Physical Demands: The work is primarily sedentary, requiring long periods of sitting in one position, intense concentration, and working for several hours at a time. Stress may be experienced on a regular basis in attempting to respond to conflicting objectives and in working against tight deadlines with limited resources.

Work Environment: The work is primarily in an office/computer room environment. Occasional fieldwork may be required. Fieldwork is in support of resource mapping projects and involves extended days of travel, sometimes in poor weather conditions. You must be comfortable with less than ideal conditions in remote settings in the accomplishment of mapping projects.
