Help

  1. Developing communications plans that enhance the Program’s mission and supports its  programming, research, media engagements, and publications
  2. Drafting web content and ensuring the Africa Program section of the Wilson Center website remains current.
  3. Managing the Program blog Africa Up Close, including soliciting, content- and copy-editing, formatting, and posting blogs.
  4. Serving as the social media manager for the Program’s social media including Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn, including. developing social media campaigns and editorial calendars.
  5. Conducting web, Google, and social media analytics for reporting purposes and drafting communications sections of grant reports.
  6. Serving as the point of contact for Africa Program publications, including liaising with authors and maintaining timelines.
  7. Working with Africa Program scholars and other contributors on publications, editing content and structure to conform to Wilson Center standards, as well as copyediting and coordinating with the External Relations team to design the final outputs.
  8. Designing digital content including photo books, banners, brochures, brand signage, logos, flyers, and social media graphics, in addition to supporting brand photo/video shoots and post-production.
  9. Formatting, proofing, and sending emails to the Africa Program mailing list.
  10. Photographing and live-tweeting Africa Program events.
  11. Working closely with and keeping the Wilson Center’s External Relations team updated on key Africa Program activities.
  12. Working with External Relations team to field media requests and coordinate interviews between reporters and Africa Program staff and scholars, particularly supporting interviews by the Director.
  13. Designing digital content including photo books, logos, flyers, and social media graphics
  14. Liaising with design and printing companies on work to be printed.
  15. Maintaining and updating the Program’s communications database.
  16. Providing logistical, event planning, research assistance, and other support for the Program’s events, workshops, conferences, seminars, and meetings, including coding and formatting event invitations, newsletters, press releases, and media announcements to the Africa Program mailing list.
  17. Tracking and monitoring key Africa-related news and activities.

Knowledge Required by the Position

Possess experience Using social media tools such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and/or YouTube to promote program activities; required ; knowledge of HTML and ability to use content management systems to update websites (familiarity with Drupal a plus); experience using and reporting on Google Analytics or other web and social media performance metrics; experience with copyediting, formatting, and publishing documents using Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier Pro, and After Effects; experience and/or education that demonstrates a background in  in African studies/affairs; and knowledge of organizations, networks, and listservs and groups  that are part of the U.S.-Africa policy community in Washington, D.C.

Qualifications

Applicants must have at least one full year (12-months) of specialized experience at, or equivalent to, the Grade 6 grade level (relative to market standards) showing excellent organizational skills; providing communications support, including drafting web content; creating social media content and managing social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook; LinkedIn and Youtube; conducting  and providing reports on web, Google, and social media analytics; coordinating publication design and dissemination; managing email marketing; developing communications plans; coordinating media requests and engagement; maintaining communications databases; and supporting event design and execution, including event photography.

Education

To be minimally qualified applicants must possess excellent organizational skills; compose professional correspondence, reports, and a variety of other publications using proper English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style; copyedit and proofread materials for publication and possess a Bachelor’s degree or experience that demonstrates a background in communications and African studies/affairs.

  1. Demonstrated experience drafting web content, strong writing skills, and ability to keep a website updated
  2. Experience copy-editing, formatting, publishing and disseminating a variety of publication such as blog posts, research papers, policy briefs, and reports
  3. Demonstrated experience with graphic design work, including experience with Adobe Creative Cloud applications.
  4. Experience with blogging, including editing, formatting, and publishing blog posts.
  5. Experience with social media and web analytics, specifically utilizing Google Analytics to pull data and draw analyses for reporting requirement.
  6. Experience with social media, including ability to draft professional and engaging social media posts.
  7. Experience with Twitter, particularly live-tweeting events, and event photography.
  8. Experience in media relations, ability to coordinate interviews with external members of the press, and provide logistical support to the Director, Scholars, Program staff..
  9. Experience with crafting event invitations to drive engagement and participation of a variety of audiences and stakeholders
  10. Experience with planning events and providing logistics support, and performing program research.
  11. Strong organizational skills, ability to set and adhere to a timeline, and experience coordinating projects across points of contact across departments and with outside contributors.
  12. Experience and/or education that demonstrates a background in communications and African studies/affairs.
