Duties

Help
  • Meets with visitors to provide information concerning points of interest, travel routes, historical and natural features, site use opportunities and limitations, and park activities.
  • Posts daily weather, flash flood, and road conditions for the safety of visitors. Closes areas when conditions warrant.
  • Provides applicants information on issuance of permits; takes initial application for permit; informs permit holders of action required to correct minor violations of permits and resolves major violations.
  • Ensures that commercial outfitters are in compliance with Special Recreation Permit stipulations to include conformance with laws and land use plans, public safety, resource protection, etc., and handling suspected violations.
  • Ensures protection of property from visitor-related depredation. Controls visitor use traffic in facilities.
  • Reviews visitor use patterns and their effects on the resources; instrumental in making changes in operations or facilities when necessary.
  • Develops interpretive programs, conducting independent research of topics using sources such as records, books, files, and, where appropriate, interviews with people who have personal knowledge of a particular site or event.
  • Presents a variety of formal and interpretive programs to include, but not limited to, orientation talks, environmental education programs, conducted walks, demonstrations, and campfire programs.
  • Coordinates projects identified in the annual work plan including planning, designing, surveying, construction, and maintenance of trails, campsites, etc., as required.
  • Gathers and analyzes data related to existing recreational resources to recognize prominent trends.
  • Prepares recreation areas/sites for visitor use to include planning, operation, and required maintenance.
  • Plans day-to-day operations of a recreation area or site that provides such facilities as camping, water sports, or picnic areas.
  • Coordinates routine activities with maintenance personnel. Performs day-to-day operations at a visitor center or customer use area such as campgrounds, picnic areas, trails, and/or other specialized recreational opportunities.

Qualifications

This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor will be rated not qualified.
Selective Placement Factor: Ability to traverse expert-level technical terrain with an off-road motorcycle and Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV).

TO QUALIFY FOR THE GS-05 GRADE LEVEL, you must satisfy one of the requirements described below:
1) Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 level. Examples of specialized experience include explaining regulations to park visitors; providing information and advice on park activities and resources; maintaining recreation facilities or trails; or monitoring special recreation permits.

2) EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION:
Successful completion of four year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester hours of related course work, such as, natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources related to duties performed by a Park Ranger.

3) A combination of specialized experience and education as listed above to meet total experience. The combined specialized experience and education must equal 100%.

TO QUALIFY FOR THE GS-07 GRADE LEVEL, you must satisfy one of the requirements described below:

1) EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level. Examples of specialized experience include experience as a park guide or tour leader; archaeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; planning day to day operations of a recreation area providing such facilities as camping, water sports, picnic areas, or coordinating routine activities with maintenance personnel; advising visitors concerning safety, fire prevention, and proper and authorized uses of recreational facilities; and collecting fees.

2) EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION:
One full academic year of graduate education (18 semester hours/27 quarter hours) related to Park Ranger duties.

3) COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
: You may meet the qualifications requirement for this position by combining specialized experience and appropriate graduate education according to the following formula: (a) your total months of full time specialized experience as a percentage of a 12 month total; PLUS (b) your total number of qualifying graduate semester or quarter hours as a percentage of one year of graduate study leading to a master's degree. The total of the two percentages must equal at least 100 percent.

4) Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.) with a bachelor's degree: S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled based on the courses listed above for Education.
S.A.A. is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership.

  1. Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.
  2. Grade-point average (G.P.A.)-- Applicants must have a grade-point average of:
    1. 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or
    2. 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.

3. Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society -- Applicants can be considered eligible based on membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies listed at this link: Association of College Honor Societies (external link). Agencies considering eligibility based on any society not included in the following list must ensure that the honor society meets the minimum requirements of the Association of College Honor Societies. Membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision.

Individuals should be capable of working alone, or with other people, during early morning hours, night, or during the day.

Physical Demands / Work Environment: Work may take place in extremely remote environments and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. The work is performed outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; positions require physical exertions, such as, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Individuals should be capable of working alone, or with other people, during early morning hours, night, or during the day.
