Duties

Help
  • Make genetic modifications to cells.
  • Isolate DNA from cells/ pigs.
  • Collect other samples from pigs both dead and alive (e.g. blood, feces, tissue, etc.)
  • Prepare sterile culture solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory or animal space.
  • Handle, treat, and perform day-to-day care of pigs.
  • Adapt, modify, or develop new techniques and/ or procedures to satisfy the needs of the research project.
  • Search for literature pertinent to area of research for new procedures or techniques to use in the laboratory or animal production field.
  • Extensive practical knowledge of the principles of biological science (e.g., animal physiology, cell culture, microbiology, genetics, etc.) of the research being conducted.
  • Recognize results that are unexpected, unusual or erroneous and to independently initiate action to overcome technical difficulties or refer for professional resolution or interpretation.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and modify complex/ specialized equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures (e.g. microscopes, tri-gas incubators, imaging systems, etc.).
  • Independently initiate action to resolve or correct technical difficulties and results, or recommends resolution to supervisor.
  • Use of electronic and microprocessor-based calculators and equipment, and with computerized data storage and manipulation.
  • Tabulates, statistically analyzes and summarizes data using personal computers and software packages.

At The GS-08:
Qualifying experience for GS-08 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting an experiment or research project involving animals or genetics; collecting or evaluating samples related to animals or genetics; and recording or analyzing of scientific data.

OR

Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include animal science, genetics, or molecular biology.

OR

A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above. For example 6 months of specialized experience combined with 18 credit hours of relevant graduate level coursework.

At The GS-09:
Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-08 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting an experiment or research project involving animals or genetics; collecting or evaluating samples related to animals or genetics; recording and analyzing scientific data; and preparing scientific information to be included in manuscripts or preparing reports.

OR

Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include animal science, genetics, or molecular biology.

OR

A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above. For example 6 months of specialized experience combined with 18 credit hours of relevant graduate level coursework.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring walking or bending. In many situations the duration of the activity (such as most of a work day) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. In other situations, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination.
Work Environment:The work involves regular and recurring moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals or working with live animals. The employee is required to use protective clothing such as gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves.
