Duties

Help
  • Plans field trips closely related to topic(s) studied in class, which may require the incumbent to operate a Government-owned or leased vehicle.
  • Evaluates individual academic progress through the use of a variety of relevant evaluative methods/instruments and provides constructive criticism, advice and guidance to students.
  • Establish a learning environment where students can develop their ability to make rational and informed decisions.
  • Promote opportunities for students to develop rapport, interrelationships, self-discipline, and a positive self-image.
  • Instruct students in the following areas: reading, language, writing, mathematics, life skills, computer literacy, general educational development program, human development, and social studies.
  • Adapt educational materials to meet the individual needs of the students.
  • Counsel, motivate, guide and assist students in goal setting, and resolving issues.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement:
Incumbent must have a valid Secondary Teaching License and must be attached to this application.

GS-1710:
A. Bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution that included or was supplemented by supervised student teaching, and at least one course in each of the following areas: general psychology, human development, history and/or philosophy of education, and teaching methods at the learning level of the position to be filled, i.e., elementary or secondary learning level. For secondary school teaching positions, applicants must also have had at least 24 semester hours (or equivalent) of course work in each of the principal fields of instruction.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience - Applicants who have completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited or pre-accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree but who do not meet the specific course requirements shown above meet minimum qualification requirements if they have completed at least one full academic year of professional teaching experience at the elementary or secondary school level as appropriate to the position to be filled (secondary for this position). Professional teaching experience is defined as full and primary responsibility for the instruction of assigned students under general supervision in a recognized or accredited school or other accredited educational institution. This includes responsibility for preparation and presentation of lessons and the evaluation of students' progress throughout the learning period, including a determination of the student's success or failure according to established criteria.

C. Teacher certification or licensure in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States with a secondary endorsement which must be attached to the application.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-09 grade level: You must have one year specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07), in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Examples of specialized experience Include: taught subjects such as reading, language, writing, mathematics, life skills, computer literacy, general educational development program, human development, and social studies. Assisted in creating a teaching environment that provided and promoted opportunities for students to develop rapport, interrelationships, self-discipline, and a positive self-image. Experienced in developing teaching learning plans and activities, including adapting instructional materials and methods.
OR
Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., directly related to the position being filled;
OR
An appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
