Duties

  • Two positions will be filled in Region 6, Pacific Northwest Region in Data Resource Management: One position will be filled in South Western Oregon and one position in Central, Oregon.
  • The incumbent serves as a Supervisory Geospatial Systems Specialist responsible for supporting managers and resource specialists in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Provides direct oversight and management of approximately 8 to 12 Geographic Information Systems (GIS) professionals across 2 to 3 national forests.
  • Coordinates between Region 6 Data Resource Management (DRM) and 2-3 local forest units within a zoned Customer Service Area (CSA).
  • Manages the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program within the Customer Service Area (CSA).
  • Develops program of work for CSA that is in alignment with forest programs of work.
  • Coordinates with multiple forests to resolve conflicting priorities for requests of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and data analysis support.
  • Works with Data Resource Management (DRM) and forest leadership to develop and manage work priorities; balancing regional, forest and district geospatial requests.
  • Advises, counsels, and assists Forest staff and leadership regarding GIS project planning including timelines, data analysis capabilities, contracting, and other information management considerations.
  • Leads and communicates with the forests on geospatial policies and procedures.
  • Ensures interagency policies and procedures, communication procedures, GIS protocols and training requirements are adhered to and met.
  • Promotes data stewardship to support program and project planning initiatives.
  • Conducts hiring Outreach and Recruitment
  • Onboarding and Offboarding of employees
  • Supervises 25 percent or more of the time.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience Requirement: Miscellaneous Administration and Program Series, GS-0301

For the GS-12 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level. Examples of specialized experience include meeting one or more of the following: Managed project timelines and/or deliverables for natural resource related projects. Organized and maintained resource information and data to facilitate analysis subject areas such as recreation, silviculture, planning, engineering, fire and/or other natural resource programs. Coordinated conversion of geospatial information and remote sensing imagery into geospatial information system databases. Compiled natural resource, topographic, and cartographic data for creation of thematic map products. Developed procedures to produce intricately detailed maps and graphics for natural resource programs and planning documents.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
