What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

This is a term appointment not to exceed 13 months with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service.

Salary:

  • GS-07 - $58,585 (Step 01) to $76,160 (Step 10);
  • GS-09 - $70,883 (Step 01) to $92,153 (Step 10);
NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01

Help

As a Records and Information Management Specialist (Records Liaison Coordinator) within the Geology, Geophysics & Geochemistry Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Planning, investigating, organizing, inventory, preserving, retaining, dispositioning, and securing records in support of the Department of Interior (DOI) and USGS policies and procedures.
  • Providing guidance and training to Science Center Management and Staff.
  • Conducting studies of records management processes to identify problems and recommend solutions.
  • Using and/or developing data management tools to provide efficiencies in workflow as they pertain to records management.
  • Communicating scientific and technical information to audiences of differing expertise levels.

Qualifications

For GS-09:

Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-9 level:

Possess one year of specialized experience in or directly related to this position that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. To be creditable, the required specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal service.

Examples of GS-7 level work may include assisting in: 1) preparing scientific records for transfer and disposal according to applicable laws and policies; 2) implementing records policies as they relate to scientific records and understanding the business practices associated with existing policy; 3) applying business management practices and electronic recordkeeping applications to improve workflows; and 4) communicating with and training scientists in the areas of records management. This level of work typically involved following established methods and procedures or detailed instructions; using some judgment in applying techniques; solving minor problems and making routine decisions.

**OR Applicants may substitute successful completion of 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree (such as an LL.B or J.D if related). (36 semester hours, 54 quarter hours, or the equivalent).

**OR Possess a combination of appropriate specialized experience (as described above) and graduate education (as described above) that is beyond the first year of progressive graduate study to meet the qualification requirements

For GS-11:

Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-11 level:

Possess one year of specialized experience in or directly related to this position that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. To be creditable, the required specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service.

Examples of GS-9 level work may include: 1) Overseeing practices and procedures for records management and identifying and implementing improvements to workflows; 2) coordinating and preparing scientific records for transfer or disposal, applying federal records management laws, regulations, or other policies; 3) managing Center Scientific Records inventory and storage procedures and processes, including developing and using electronic recordkeeping applications; and 4) Applying the principles and concepts of information science, data and records management and the science data lifecycle and communicating these concepts to scientists so that they may apply these principles in their work. Assignments were made with the broad objectives, priorities, strategies, limitations, and deadlines defined. Work was planned and carried out independently in accordance with proven and established techniques, methods, and practices. Controversial use of approaches or modifications of standard procedures were typically discussed with a designated person before being carried out.

**OR Applicants may substitute successful completion of 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree (such as an LL.M, if related). (54 semester hours, 81 quarter hours, or the equivalent).

**OR Possess a combination of appropriate specialized experience (as described above) and graduate education (as described above) that is beyond the second year of progressive graduate study to meet the qualification requirements.
