Duties

Help
  • Digitally scan and organize the air component?s extensive paper and microfilm material into a single electronic historical archive on both NIPRNET and SIPRNET.
  • Develop and implement sound cataloguing procedures to enhance research effectiveness.
  • Gather assigned information by researching historical records, archival reference works, and a variety of other material to determine call numbers and necessary finding aid data.
  • Disseminate historical information using a variety of media including displays, oral presentations, electronic and paper publications, etc.
  • Perform a variety of duties in History, research and reference services. Answer requests for historical information requiring complex research in multiple sources.

  • This position requires walking two flights of stairs carrying boxes of documents weighing up to 15 pounds.
  • This position is subject to provisions of the DoD Priority Placement Program
  • This is a testing designated position in accordance with AFI 44-107. The incumbent will be subject to random testing for drug use
  • Employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, to include evenings, weekends and/or holidays
  • Disclosure of Political Appointments is required

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Individual Occupational Requirements and Group Standard for Professional & Scientific Positions.

BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.

OR

Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to the basic requirements above, each applicant must meet the experience or education requirement below:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in federal service which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the position being filled. Specialized experience is experience which includes assisting higher level archivists with developing plans and policies to manage an organization's historical archive, including accession actions, digitization, accessibility, cataloging, preservation and conservation; and assisting historians in researching and responding to high-level historical research requests from the internal and external customers.

OR

EDUCATION: Threefull years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, OR LL.M., in a related field.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

  1. Knowledge of general archival principles and procedures and historical methods, principles, concepts, methodology, and techniques, to include knowledge of United States, the history of air power to include, but not limited to military aerospace history heraldry and emblem programs.
  2. Skills in historical research, including the ability to determine the validity of historical information.
  3. Skill in professional historical writing, including the ability to present information objectively.
  4. Skill in researching records to extract detailed information, to include skill in organizing files, documents and records.
  5. Skill in the use of personal computer for researching and maintaining databases, retrieving information, scanning documents and heraldry products, word processing, graphic design, and electronic transmission of information.
  6. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
