Summary

There are two positions located in R6 on the Wallowa-Whitman and Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forests. There is (1) position in Baker City, OR and (1) in either Colville, WA -or- Wenatchee, WA.

Duties

Help
  • Provide detailed knowledge on the ecology of the Blue Mountains with an understanding of common objectives for Forest, Rangeland and Aquatic Resources.
  • Supervises two other ecologists and will guide annual solicitation of work requests across the three forests.
  • Lead decision-making for the group?s Program of Work, prioritize tasks, and oversee delivery of work products.
  • Cooperates with research scientists to solve resource management issues related to Forest management objectives.
  • Works with various groups to facilitate understanding of forest objectives and assists with working toward solutions for a broad range of issues.
  • Communicate regularly with Forest Staff, Line Officers, Program Managers, Resource Specialists, and external partners, in addition to leading or assisting with monitoring training.

Basic Requirement-0408 Ecology series

Degree:
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.

Specialized Experience Requirement for the GS-12: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as:

  • Evaluated the effects of changing ecological, social, and economic conditions and formulated and recommended short- and long-term ecological objectives;
  • Investigated on-the-ground ecological situations and occurrences posing particular land management problems and monitored long-term ecological studies generally dealing with changes in vegetation over time;
  • Responded to emergency oil and hazardous waste materials release notifications, including site evaluation, determination of the threat to public health or the environment and its urgency, and coordination with other concerned organizations.
  • Recommended policies, programs, and plans for the conservation, utilization, and ecosystem function of a variety of environments.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
