Summary

This position is located at the Armed Forces Retirement Home's Corporate Resources Office, which report to the Deputy Chief Operating Officer. As a Public Affairs Specialist, you will:

  • Establish and maintain a working relationship with operating officials in the Department of Defense and other Government agencies, local/state agencies, and nonprofit and private organizations to deliver the Agency’s mission to media, policy makers, congressional officials, grantees, and other key audiences.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of the news media, specialized groups interested in the organization's operation. Handle all public information and public inquiries, news releases and press queries and rebukes any unfavorable publicity.
  • Develop and approve the dissemination of official marketing materials such as: brochures, trifolds, agency newspapers, letters, fact sheets, news releases, feature articles for magazines, newspapers and professional and consumer publications. 
  • Develop and approve the official web site content such as: history, marketing materials, agency newspapers, fact sheets, news releases, current Resident home page and project updates.
  • Develop and approve the official content for The Resident Channel (TRC) such as: announcements, menus, special events, health care tips, event snapshots, event video footage and project updates.
  • Analyze and evaluate the effectiveness, efficiency and cost benefit of Agency's marketing efforts. Prepare reports, develop alternatives and makes recommendations, which will enhance the program.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

For the GS-14, you must have one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service.

Specialized experience for this position includes:
Developing and implementing recruitment for individual or community strategies; AND
Developing media relations with local and national outlets, or developing relations with Veterans Service Organizations; AND
Managing application program in a military, civilian or community setting.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- A one year probationary period may be required.
- A one year supervisory probationary period may be required.

- Selectees will be subject to the AFRH Tuberculosis Surveillance Program.
- Wear required safety clothing and/or equipment required by the position.  This may include safety shoes, hard hats, hearing protection, gloves, masks, etc.
- Will be required to randomly work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. 
- Because the AFRH’s mission requires uninterrupted, direct human support and medical care for its Residents, this position is considered essential for continuing AFRH operations. Therefore, the incumbent is expected to arrive for duty on time, as scheduled, and to complete the assigned tour during emergency situations such as hazardous weather.
