Summary

VA New Jersey Health Care System Lyons campus is large and covers one of the largest CLC and many Mental health units, acute mental health unit and so at no time the campus should be without physician coverage. This 24-hour per day coverage will be achieved by the use of all VANJHCS full time, part time staff physicians, and non-Va physicians assigned to this duty on a contractual basis. The evening and weekend coverage is provided by Fee Basis providers.

Help

It is the responsibility of the Fee Basis MOD, once assigned a specific tour of duty, to report in and out to the Lyons Medical Administrative Assistant (MAA) on duty at the hours assigned and to fulfill all of the obligations of the position. Medical Officer of the Day (MOD)- MOD stands for Medical Officer of the Day. These are fee basis (per-diem) providers who provide coverage to the VANJHCS at the Lyons Campus during our "WHEN" hours (weekend, evening, holiday and night hours) . The assigned MOD is to remain on duty until relieved by staff or on weekend and holidays by the oncoming MOD as set fourth in monthly MOD on-call rosters. the MOD will not leave the facility grounds during his/her tour of duty without the permission of the Service Chief or designee, at which time another authorized physician will be detailed. Designated Medical Officer on call will remain on campus until such time as the MOD report to duty.

Duties include:
Responding to all medical and behavioral health emergencies or crisis
Responding to calls from nursing staff by phone or in person. Patients should be examined and evaluated when clinically indicated. All clinical interactions including phone calls should be documented using the CPRS progress note titles "EXT Care//Medical Officer"
Processing new admissions that arrive during his/her tour of duty i.e., reconciling medications, writing admission orders, admission note and preforming a history and physical (H&P) exam
Following up on tests pending from the day tour
Making rounds to include interface with Charge Nurse for concerns. Rounds should be done a minimum of once per shift,
Evaluating specific patients that are signed out by the on-tour clinicians
Determining the appropriate level of care to transfer a patient in all cases
Pronouncing patients, notifying the family and requesting an autopsy in all cases. Both must be documented in CPRS.
Providing palliative care/ end of life care and comfort care as indicated
Relaying all activity and patient care with an in person handoff and electronic log
MOD should always call families to update them if a veteran has a fall, has a change in condition, transfer out to hospital or readmission in the campus.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: Work is mostly sedentary in nature. Work requires moderate lifting, stopping, walking, bending, standing, pushing and pulling.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period.
