Duties

Help

Prepares and coordinates the writing of the cultural resources section of the resources management plan and specific actions plans pertaining to the management and protection of cultural resources. Develops and maintains effective working relations with groups, agencies and the public. Coordinates park cultural resources strategies and programs, develops and maintains relationships with researchers, subject matter experts, and resources managers of other agencies, cooperating universities, and associated groups. Performs or directs substantive, project-oriented work and negotiates cooperative instruments needed to effectively carry out resource stewardship goals. Services as the Contracting Officer's Technical Representative for projects conducted through contracts, interagency agreements, and cooperative agreements. Maintains liaison with the State Historic Preservation Office. Manages the museum collections documenting, preservation, protection, exhibition, and use of park collections whether housed in the park or offsite repository according to NPS guidelines.

  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.

  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 1-5 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-03/23/2021-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience.

For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.

BASIC REQUIREMENT: Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: 1) History of archaeology, 2) Archaeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa, 3) Regional archaeology, archaeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development, 4) Theory and methods of archaeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques, 5) Archaeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work. AND six semester hours of related course work in: 1) geography, geology, or cultural geography; 2) history, historiography, or historical archaeology; 3) environmental studies; 4) scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or 5) surveying; AND Archaeological field school. You must include a copy of your transcripts.

OR

Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a related curriculum: anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics); history; American studies; or a related discipline, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A (including archaeological field school). You must include a copy of your transcripts.

OR

four years of specialized experience in archaeological work that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archaeology. The work experience must have included archaeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archaeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archaeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archaeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archaeological project.

In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, all applicants for this position must meet the minimum qualifications for the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following :

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: conducting bio archaeological/osteological assessments and reports, cultural resource inventory surveys, archaeological field surveys; archaeological excavation projects; assessments and documentation projects, laboratory analysis of artifacts, and preparation of technical reports; NAGPRA-related work including participating in consultations, determinations of NAPRA significance, and cultural affiliation assessments. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in anthropology, archaeology, or related fields from an accredited educational institution. You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. You must include transcripts.

Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing work are sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.

Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, volcanoes, caves, firelines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts, and forests. Flying in fixed-winged aircraft and helicopters is possible.
