Duties

Help

This position is the basic trainee level for FEO work. Training is provided through classroom instruction and on-the-job assignments. Training topics include: firearms identification; firearms regulations, rulings, and legal definitions; firearms safety; armorer’s courses; firearms interstate nexus; oral and written communication; ATF style guide for writing correspondence; basic machinist courses; and an introduction to required markings for firearms manufacturers and importers.

Provides technical investigative assistance and advice in support of investigations involving criminal violations of Federal firearms laws. This includes conducting machinegun, destructive device, and ammunition examinations resulting in legally binding determinations and classifications for other Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies, and providing assistance to foreign governments.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progresses.

Qualifications

To qualify for GS-9 candidates must also have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-7.

Specialized experience is demonstrated experience, which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. Experience must be in the normal line of progression or must be related to the work of the position advertised and must be reflected in resume.  Examples of specialized experience include:

Experience utilizing and/or implementing the basic regulations and statutes of the Gun Control Act of 1968, the National Firearms Act of 1934, the Arms Export Control Act of 1976 and the applicable amendments to these statutes; experience identifying, examining, assembling/disassembling, and test-firing military and commercial firearms and ammunition; experience working with general shop tools and equipment; experience following safety protocols; and experience writing detailed reports.

The GS-9 salary range starts at $60, 129.   If you are a new federal (civil service) employee, your starting salary will be set at the Step 1 for this position and the grade level for which you are selected.

Education

In lieu of specialized experience you may qualify for the GS-9: You must have at least one year of specialized experience at, or equivalent to, the GS-7 Federal grade level. Specialized experience for the position is defined as (define the specialized experience for each grade level); OR (substitution of education, if applicable) For example, two full years of graduate education or a master's degree, LL.B, J.D., or equivalent degree that demonstrates the competencies needed to do the work of the position may be substituted for the experience required; OR a combination of education and experience as listed above.

  • Knowledge  and understanding of the basic provisions of the Gun Control Act of 1968, the National Firearms Act of 1934, and the Arms Export Control Act of 1976 and applicable amendments to these statues
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of shop machinery such as lathes, drill press and specially designed testing equipment.
  • Ability to operate machinery and use hand tools as it relates to firearms
  • Knowledge of the fundamental operating principles of a variety of firearms including muskets, cap and ball firearms, breech loading, muzzle loading, semiautomatic/automatic firearms, military firearms and silencers and related components
  • Knowledge of and understanding of standardized test equipment and instruments utilized for the purpose of firearms examination. 
  • Ability to communicate orally regarding firearms, ammunition and other related devices 
  • Ability to communicate in writing  to prepare reports
