Help

As an IT Specialist in the Pathways Recent Graduates program, some of your major responsibilities will include:

  • Reviewing customer IT usage to identify and clarify current and anticipated data requirements
  • Identifying and resolving issues and problems, such as those relating to network configuration, systems services, or other IT matters
  • Identifying and recommending training needs for customer personnel or assisting customers in accessing network services
  • Conducting technical analysis of IT requirements and capabilities to determine needed equipment changes to meet user requirements, e.g., to upgrade or enhance network component capabilities

If selected, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Receive authorization from OPM on any job offer you receive, if you are or were (within the last 5 years) a Schedule A, Schedule C, or non-career SES political appointee.

  • Undergo and pass a background investigation (Tier 2 investigation level).

If selected as a participant in our Pathways Recent Graduates program, you will:
  • Receive at least 40 hours of formal training directly linked to your employment field in addition to soft skill training
  • Sign a participant agreement
  • Enjoy annual promotions for the first 2-3 years if you perform successfully.

The GS-7/9 salary range starts at $49,157.00 per year. If you are a new federal employee, your starting salary will likely be set at the Step 1 of the grade for which you are selected.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Your experience must be IT related; the experience may be demonstrated by paid or unpaid experience and/or completion of specific, intensive training (for example, IT certification) as appropriate. Your degree must be in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or a degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks

You must also demonstrate experience with each of the four competencies listed below:

1. Attention to Detail - This skill is generally demonstrated by assignments where the applicant monitors, maintains, or updates data, records, or other information.2. Customer Service - This skill is generally demonstrated by assignments where the applicant develops a working knowledge of the customer's business or function.3. Oral Communication - This skill is generally demonstrated by assignments where the applicant contacts others orally to obtain and provide information.4. Problem Solving - This skill is generally demonstrated by assignments where the applicant identifies or anticipates needs or problem.

In addition to the Basic Requirements stated above, you must meet one of the following to qualify at the GS-7 level:

A. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as applying a basic knowledge of IT principles, concepts, and methods to perform routine IT work and project management activities including: providing routine advice and guidance on technology needs, applying basic procurement practices and procedures; assisting higher level specialists with IT projects; OR

B. EDUCATION: One full year of graduate level education or a master's or higher degree, e.g., LL.B., J.D., LL.M., PhD. Degree must be in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or a degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks;OR

C. Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) at the baccalaureate level is fully qualifying at the GS-7 level. To claim SAA, submit documentation of one of the following:
  1. Class standing -- You must be in the upper third of your graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.
  2. Grade-point average (rounded to one decimal point) of: (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of your curriculum; OR (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in your major field or the required courses in your major field completed during your final 2 years of the curriculum.
  3. Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society in one of the national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies.
D. A combination of specialized experience and graduate level education as described in "A" and "B" above that, when combined, fulfills the requirements.

In addition to the Basic Requirements stated above, you must meet one of the following to qualify at the GS-9 level:

A. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as utilizing computer requirements for project assignments consisting of several related tasks, making minor modifications to system parts. Assignments require analysis of interrelationships of system components, planning the sequence of actions to accomplish assignment, and personal responsibility for at least a segment of the overall project; OR

B. EDUCATION: A master's degree or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree. Degree must be in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or a degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks. OR

C. A combination of specialized experience and graduate level education as described in "A" and "B" above that, when combined, fulfills the requirements.
