Duties

Help
  • Serve as the primary subject matter expert for aquatic monitoring issues for the BLM.
  • Design and implement projects investigating the condition of streams and rivers including analysis of aquatic data.
  • Use specialized tools such as ArcGIS, databases, and -R- statistical software to complete complicated analysis.
  • Design and manage statistically-valid survey designs for aquatic resources.
  • Advise field offices regarding all aspects of data collection, including protocol development, study design, training, and data analysis.
  • Provide expert technical advice and direction for the collection, warehousing, analysis, and reporting of the BLM?s upland/terrestrial natural resource inventory, assessment, and monitoring efforts.

For the GS-13: In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement in addition to meeting the Basic Education Requirement. Be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade (GS-12) of the position to be filled. Examples include: Coordinating data collection and reporting at the Field Office, District, State or Regional level, designing and carrying out local surveys for aquatic resources. Designing and managing statistically valid survey designs for aquatic resources with minimal oversight from a supervisor. Provide review or guidance of monitoring programs at the state or regional level. Coordinate with federal and other entities for aquatic resources management.

Physical Demands: Work is performed in an office setting requiring both long periods of sitting and attention to detail. The work may include periods of occasional stress related to intensive concentration, conflict resolution, and meeting tight deadlines. Field trips, which may require up to 70% travel, may involve walking over rough, uneven, swampy, and rocky terrain in all types of weather. In addition, bending, stooping, and lifting when demonstrating on-the-ground monitoring techniques. Long periods of travel in aircraft and in vehicles that may go on or off designated roads is also required.

Work Environment: Much of the work is performed in an office setting with adequate heating, cooling, and lighting. Field trips may involve driving or walking in all types of weather including snow, ice, and other inclement weather common to the Western United States.

Education

Basic Education Requirements: This position has a positive education requirement which requires that you have a degree in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences. 1. Aquatic Ecology: Skilled in aquatic ecology, and how management influences aquatic ecological health and commonly used aquatic assessment, inventory, and monitoring techniques.

3. Writing: Experience coordinating with state, federal and local entities to address land management issues and related
research needs and communicating monitoring program development and results to diverse audiences.
