Summary

This position is an Entomologist located in the Pollinator Health in Southern Crop Ecosystems Research Unit, Southern Pollinator Health Center, Agricultural Research Service, United States Department of Agriculture, in Stoneville, Mississippi.

The purpose of the position is to conduct experiments and analyses, and develop new methodologies which will contribute to an understanding of biological processes which are important in addressing the biology and management of honey bees.

Duties

Help
  • Takes leading role in honey beekeeping to support the research effort.
  • Manages honey bee yards and maintains bee colonies as required to produce enough healthy (pest/disease-free) bees for supporting unit bee research program.
  • Applies effective measures to control small hive beetle, wax moth, varroa mite, etc. that cause summer dying of honey bee colonies.
  • Maintains detailed records of research and colony maintenance, including computer databases.
  • Reviews scientific, statistical, and beekeeping literature and consults with specialists in the field for information relevant to the development and completion of specific research projects.
  • Maintains equipment and instrumentation in top working condition, performing routine preventive maintenance and minor repairs, and promptly reporting signs of malfunction or need for major repairs.
  • Prepares reports and manuscripts, including experimental design, results, and evaluation in the form suitable as the basis for the first draft of written reports to scientific journals.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements:

Degree: entomology; or a related discipline of the biological or physical sciences that included at least 16 semester hours in entomology.

OR

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major that included course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

At the GS-09:
Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting with improving bee health or minimizing risk to stressors including pesticides and pests with relation to bees; and operating and maintaining scientific equipment or performing scientific techniques.

OR

Education: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. Related degrees may include Entomology or a degree with focus on bees.

OR

A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above.

At the GS-11:
Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting with improving honey bee health or minimizing risk to stressors including pesticides and pests with relation to honey bees; operating and maintaining scientific equipment or performing scientific techniques; and preparing results of research findings for inclusion in manuscripts, reports or presentations.

OR

Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. Related degrees may include Entomology or a degree with focus on bees.

OR

A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands
The work is done in laboratory, greenhouse (indoor), and field. Beekeeping is performed outside in subtropical heat and may require the lifting of colony parts weighing up to 100 pounds. Indoor work involving use of microscopes and computers will require extended periods of sitting and conditions straining to the eyes. Manipulation of living and dead honey bees and parts requires manual dexterity. Motor Vehicle or Commercial Driver's License is required. Pesticide Applicators License is required. The incumbent cannot be allergic to honey bees or bee venom.

Work Environment
The work environment involves working at high outdoor temperatures (up to 105 F) and humidity. Wearing of protective gear is required. Stings from defensive honey bees are taken as a matter of course. Some exposure to chemicals, especially miticides, in both the laboratory and field may occur.
