Duties

Help
  • Serving as the organizations technical expert for the collection, analysis. reporting data for the qualitative and quantitative inventory and monitoring of vegetation, soil, and water resources and the associated wildlife habitat.
  • Reporting of terrestrial and aquatic resource data for the qualitative and quantitative inventory and monitoring of vegetation, soil, and water resources and the associated wildlife habitat.
  • Providing expert technical advice and direction for the collection, warehousing, analysis, and reporting of the organizations terrestrial/aquatic inventory program.
  • Analyzing natural resource monitoring and assessment data at multiple scales.
  • Solving problems in the statistical analysis of vegetation, soil, and water resources data and other natural resource issues.
  • Providing support to motivate, train, and mentor state, district, or field office personnel.

Qualifications

This position has a positive education requirement which requires that you have a degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position or a combination of education and experience (courses equivalent to a major, as shown above plus appropriate experience or additional education). You will need to clearly state your undergraduate/graduate degree(s) and submit your college transcripts or a listing of your college courses that includes credits and grades.

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the one year of specialized experience requirement. Be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade (GS-11) of the position to be filled.
Examples include: Coordinating natural resource and habitat data collection and reporting at the local or state/regional level; training others on ecological monitoring methods including assessment inventory and monitoring methodology (AIM), Habitat Assessment Framework (HAF), Rangeland Health Standards and related standards and guidelines; guiding and interpreting analyses on sagebrush ecosystems datasets; assessing proposed wildlife habitat sampling designs for statistical soundness; recommending statistically sound approaches to Western U.S. public lands management challenges at the local or regional scale; and contributing to the study reports and technical briefings for senior level in the areas of assessment, inventory and/or monitoring of natural resources.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.

Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level.

Education

Education requirements for the 0401 series: Per OPM's qualification standards, you must have a degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to the position. You may also fulfil this requirement with a combination of education and experience.

Education requirements for the 0408 series: Per OPM's qualification standards, you must have a degree in biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.
