Duties

Help

As a Biological Science Tech (Wildlife) your duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Planning and implementation of wildlife and/or plant censuses and surveys.
  • Monitor and assist in control of wildlife, plant disease outbreaks, pest plant control, mowing/seeding activities and vegetation removal.
  • Develop databases and analyzing data using standard statistical methods and procedures.
  • Assist with habitat management activities such as tractor mowing, maintaining/repairing fence to prevent cattle trespass, participating in prescribed burns, etc.
  • Provide work direction and guidance to biological technicians and volunteers and YCC enrollees.

This is a term position expected to last 13 months but may be extended up to a total of 4 years.

  • Drug Testing Position: position may be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. This will only be required if you will be working with equipment that requires drug testing in order to operate equipment.

  • Probationary Period: Selectees may be required to successfully complete a probationary period.
  • Work Schedule: Work may require working evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Certification(s) Requirement: Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain USFWS approved certification(s) within 6 months of employment. These may include: Boat Operation, ATV, UTV, Tractor Operation, Pesticide Application, wildland fire, etc.
  • Heavy Lifting: Work may require ability to lift and carry items up to 50 pounds over uneven terrain.

Qualifications

Only experience and education obtained by02/16/2021 will be considered.

In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification.

Basic Requirement:
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled.

Minimum Qualification GS-7
One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-6 grade level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience may include: basic and applied habitat restoration techniques of wetland habitats for the benefit of various species, with emphasis on invertebrates; experience in the practices/techniques and terminology related to aquatic biology and habitats; capturing, handling and monitoring a variety of species; knowledge and experience working with laws and regulations, as well as policies pertaining to the protection of a variety of federally listed species and their habitat; using computer technology to maintain and retrieve information from automated data systems, and statistical software programs in order to develop reports; working with and leading volunteers; ability to effectively communicate orally.

I have successfully completed at least 1 year (18 semester hours) of graduate level education in coursework that is directly related to this position. I understand that my transcripts must clearly show this education or I will be determined to be not qualified for this position.
OR
I have a combination of specialized experience and graduate education as described above which equates to 100% of the qualification requirement when combined. (When combining, only education in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours is creditable.) I understand that my resume and transcripts must clearly show this experience and education or I will be determined to be not qualified for this position.

If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
