In addition to the basic education requirement, you must have at least one year of specialized experience described below. Please ensure to read the Education section for requirements.
GS-07: Applicants must possess one (1) year of year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 in Federal Service. Examples may include: participates in cultural resource inventories; completes tasks designed to develop familiarity with Section 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act, enters inventory and site data into various geospatial databases, - OR- one full year of graduate-level education, -OR- Superior Academic Achievement -OR- a combination of education and experience.
Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) is based on: 1) class standing, 2) grade-point average, or 3) honor society membership. Specific requirements are: 1) Class Standing: Upper third of graduating class based on completed courses; 2a) Grade Point Average: 3.0 or higher as recorded on official transcript or as computed based on 4 years of education; 2b) based on courses completed during the final full 2 years of curriculum; -OR- 2c) 3.5 or higher based on average of courses completed in the specific major field of study; or 3) Honor Society Membership: Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society listed in the Association of College Honor Societies, Booklet of Information, and/or Baird's Manual of American College Fraternities (membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision).
S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled.
GS-09: Applicants must possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 in Federal Service. Examples may include: participation in archeological surveys and site evaluation work; involvement in field research; compiling and/or preparing archeological site records and technical reports; - OR- 2 full years of directly related, progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree -OR- a combination of education and experience.
GS-11: Applicants must possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 in Federal Service. Examples may include: planning and carrying out specific project and assignments to their completion; Planning and conducting archeological research, excavations, documentation, and investigations; Incorporating appropriate geographic information system (GIS) technology to provide comprehensive and scientifically sound answers to complex issues; Preparing or interpreting a variety of technical documents, such as, archaeological evaluations, completion reports, management summaries, permits, publications and/or peer-reviewed journal articles; and determining budget and scope of program assignments and projects; OR three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D.
degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in an accredited college or university.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level.
Basic Requirement:
Education: Degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: History of archaeology, archaeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa, Regional archaeology, archaeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development, theory and methods of archaeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques, and Archaeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work. AND Six semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archaeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying. AND
Archaeological field school. Related Curriculum: degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A.1 (including archaeological field school). OR Combination of Education and Experience: College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. OR Experience: Four years of archaeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archaeology. The work experience must have included archaeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archaeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.
