Summary

This position serves as wildlife biologist USDA, APHIS, WS, NWRC. WS is authorized by statute to conduct a national program to reduce conflicts and damage caused by wildlife. Program activities are directed towards protecting agriculture, property, natural resources (including rare or special species), and reducing conflicts that jeopardize human health and safety. WS has both an operational function across all states and research/methods branch centered in Fort Collins CO.

Duties

Help
  • The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity.
  • The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Monitor changes in populations of feral ungulates using remote cameras as eradication efforts occur, and improve our understanding of ecological factors that may increase efficiency of such efforts.
  • Attach GPS collars, monitor and analyze movements of feral ungulates to measure behavioral responses to eradication efforts.
  • Examine for changes in population dynamics of feral ungulates as population abundances change.
  • Lead a research team for accomplishing the above duties, in coordination the supervising Research Biologist.
  • Develop and contribute ideas that will establish new research directions within the scope of the eradication effort of feral ungulates.
  • Collaborate with Wildlife Services operations to: 1) Assist with removal of feral ungulates, 2) coordination of data collection, 3) provide research-based advice for continued eradication efforts.
  • Work closely with feral swine research biologists to communicate progress and results.
  • Results will be formally reported in the form of manuscripts to be submitted in peer-reviewed journals and other scientific venues such as conferences and workshops.

  • In addition to locality pay listed above, this duty location is eligible for COLA. This duty location may also be eligible for partial Post Differential Allowance and Home Leave.
  • The combined total of COLA and Post Differential Allowance may not exceed 25% by law.
  • May need to operate 4X4 vehicles (including all-terrain and/or utility task vehicles), boats, snow mobiles, or ride horseback over rough terrain and in other off-road environments.
  • To fulfill field or laboratory requirements in this position, proof of specific vaccinations and boosters, may be required as a condition of employment to prevent contracting preventable diseases.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
BASIC REQUIREMENT: Degree: biological science that included:

  • At least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; and
  • At least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and
  • At least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.
OR: Combination of education and experience: equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to the basic requirement:

FOR THE GS-11 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-09 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:
  • Experience with study design for wildlife and/or wildlife management field studies
  • Experience with analyzing and interpreting wildlife data
  • Experience writing reports and/or manuscripts and presenting research findings
OR 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree in Wildlife Ecology, Wildlife Biology, Biology, Wildlife Management or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-11 GRADE LEVEL: Applicants may have combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience to meet total qualification requirements. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for that grade level.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
