Duties

Help

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  1. Formulate, plan, design, develop and conduct strong independent and original programs of

research and scholarship in VLBI observations of supermassive black holes.

  1. Participates in the development of software, algorithms and procedures for the reduction, analysis, and interpretation of VLBI data.
  2. Participates in development of new system concepts and designs for horizon-scale black hole observation.
  3. Disseminates the results of the research in which engaged, through publication in scientific journals, presentation of findings at scientific meetings, and by participation in project reviews as required.
  4. Collaborates in the development of proposals for research funding.
  5. Engages in the -research and scholarly activities of the research group, including mentoring research interns, students and postdoctoral fellows and outreach and dissemination efforts.
  6. Leads and participates in the development of analysis tools, modeling and simulation methods that allow optimization of ngEHT parameters through evaluation of science extraction metrics.
  7. Participates in observations and operations as needed.
  8. Performs other duties as required.

In addition to the basic requirements, candidates for the grade 12 must also possess at a minimum 
of one year specialized experience equivalent to at least grade 11 in the normal line of progression for this occupation.  Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position such as professional research experience in radio astrophysics and/or very long baseline interferometry and/or black hole physics.

Education

Basic Requirements: A. Degree: in one or a combination of astronomy, physics, mathematics, space science, or electronics. The course work must have included differential and integral calculus and 12 semester hours in astronomy and/or physics.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience -- at least 30 semester hours of courses equivalent to a major in any combination of astronomy, space science, physics, mathematics, and electronics, with required course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

  • Ability to formulate and lead scientific research programs.
  • Knowledge of the technical methods, principles and practices in the field of high data-cadence VLBI observatns of of supermassive black holes.
  • Advanced knowledge of the theory of black hole physics.
  • Knowledge and skill in data reduction and analysis techniques applicable to EHT VLBI observations.
  • Ability to perform scientific research at the highest level as may be evidenced by publications, citations, peer review, and leadership roles in the broader scientific community.
