Duties

Help
  • You will assist the Supervisory Wildlife Biologist with management of marine, estuary, and freshwater water and anadromous species and habitats.
  • You will manage and coordinate the habitats and the ecosystems upon which fish and marine dependent species depend.
  • You will develop and apply programmatic agreements and management plans as negotiated with federal and wildlife agencies.
  • You will develop bulletins and standard operating procedures for implementing plans and agreements.
  • You will perform biological monitoring and management of the Base's sport fishing programs.
  • You will execute program development, planning and budgeting through the Planning, Programming, Budgeting and Execution (PPBE) process.
  • You will evaluate military training and Base maintenance and construction activities on natural resources for the Base and major tenant organizations.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-09) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional Fishery Biologist performing most or all of the following duties: 1) Managing federal and state listed threatened, endangered fish and marine mammal species and their freshwater, marine, estuarine, and anadromous fisheries and habitats; 2) Analyzing complex natural resources factors in conjunction with impacts of an organization's mission requirements (e.g., construction, maintenance projects, military training actions); 3) Developing management plans in compliance with the laws, regulations, and executive orders affecting fish and wildlife and their habitats; 4) Performing program development, planning and budgeting, to include management of exotic species causing undesirable impacts to endangered species; and 5) Communicating both orally and in writing to brief senior leaders on program status and recommend environmental compliance strategies.

Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:
You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree in biological science that included:
- At least 6 semester hours in aquatic subjects such as limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture, or related courses in the field of fishery biology; and
- At least 12 semester hours in the animal sciences in such subjects as general zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, entomology, parasitology, ecology, cellular biology, genetics, or research in these fields. (Excess course work in aquatic subjects may be used to meet this requirement when appropriate.)
OR
You must have a combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), of which a minimum of 6 semester hours were in aquatic subjects and 12 semester hours were in the animal sciences, as shown in above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

This position is eligible for part time, full time or ad-hoc telework at the discretion of management.

This position requires work performed outdoors in varying weather conditions during daylight and nighttime. Fieldwork may be in undeveloped areas containing poison oak, stinging nettle, insects, quicksand, soft or rocky substrates, and potentially dangerous wildlife. This position may require work for up to eight hours without a formal break. Work may involve handling wild animals and chemicals or equipment used to immobilize/euthanize animals.

This position requires lifting up to 50 pounds.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
