Summary
The NSSC performs research as provided by legislative authority and mandates, develops and adapts research findings, and provides technology transfer and technical services in soils to the NCSS Program, NRCS, other agencies, and internationally. This position will focus on the development and application of soil biology knowledge, methods and information related to soil survey
Designs and conducts research projects in support of the NRCS mission and SPSD goals and milestones.
Communicates results and findings of research in refereed publications and technical guidance. Transfers information and improves the soil survey program through training, guidance documents and interactions with National Leaders and their staffs.
Works within a team concept to develop and implement ways to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality of the products and services provided to internal and external customers.
Performs duties in a manner supportive of a safe and healthy working environment, exercises safety precautions when exposed to dangerous objects, chemicals, extreme temperatures, etc.
Develops, integrates and evaluates soil biology, soil health, dynamic soil properties and related research topics in support of soil survey, ecological sites and other SPSD priorities.
Uses advanced analytical techniques to assess dynamic soil properties, including physical, chemical, and biological parameters.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
Soil Science Series 0470
Basic Requirements:
Degree: soil science or a closely related discipline that included 30 semester hours or equivalent in biological, physical, or earth science, with a minimum of 15 semester hours in such subjects as soil genesis, pedology, soil chemistry, soil physics, and soil fertility.
OR
Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in soil science or a related discipline that included at least 30 semester hours in the biological, physical, or earth sciences. At least 15 of these semester hours must have been in the areas specified in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Additional RequirementsIn addition to meeting the basic requirements for one of the series described above, applicants must also meet the additional qualifications requirements as stated below.
Specialized Experience: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service or possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or possess an equivalent combination of graduate level education and experience. Graduate education must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped applicants with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Specialized experience is defined as experience using the principles, theories, and practices of soil science, biogeochemistry, agronomy, and soil ecology to conduct research on the influence soil science; Experience collecting and analyzing soil samples with methodology used to measure, quantify, and compare soil biology or soil health metrics; Experience using analytical and statistical approaches; AND Experience completing research that results in peer-reviewed publications, scientific presentations at conferences, and other popular science communications.
OR a combination of graduate level education and specialized experience.
