  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid class A or B CDL driver's license.
  • Federal Wage System employees, WG/WL/WS etc., must satisfactorily complete the appropriate pre-employment and annual Depot Medical Examination.
  • This position requires that the employee be on call for emergency situations.
  • Subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.

Qualifications

This position is a TERM position. It is temporary and may be extended up to a maximum of eight years. This position may be converted to permanent career or career-conditional appointment without further competition as long as all requirements are met and a conversion opportunity exists. To be eligible for conversion, employee must complete at least 2 years of current continuous service under a TERM appointment in the competitive service AND employee must have a current performance rating under such TERM appointment of at least fully successful or equivalent.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Tractor Operator~ without more than normal supervision. The ability to perform common use of industrial tractors to mow grass and weeds; operate equipment in a safe manner; and perform basic maintenance on equipment. Works under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order)
  • Physical effort: Light to moderate physical effort while performing duties such as operating tractors and uncoupling and making couplings between tractors and towed vehicles. The work requires frequent stooping, bending, reaching, and arm and leg movement to operate tractor controls. Operators frequently lift and carry parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. May be required to move heavier items with assistance from other workers or mechanical lifting devices.
  • Working Conditions: Operators may be required to maneuver vehicles/tractors over dangerous slopes, rough terrain and in heavily congested areas. They are subject to drafts, noise, and varying temperatures inside. Exposure to weather and temperature extremes outside, as well as high noise levels, vibrations, and jolts from the tractor and towed equipment. Also exposed to dust, grease, and fumes. They wear protective clothing and devices as required such as respirator, goggles, mask, coveralls, safety shoes, ear plugs, glasses, gloves, etc.
