The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) Program is a program designed to hire former military corpsmen, combat medics and medical technicians into positions at VA Medical Centers as an integral part of the medical team. ICTs operate within clearly-defined clinical competencies. For the purposes of this national job announcement ICTs may work in multiple clinical settings based on facility needs, these include but are not limited to, Emergency Medicine, Critical Care, Primary Care, Specialty Clinics, and COVID Screening and Swabbing Stations. Clinical responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Patient education within scope of care or while providing an intervention.
Electronic Health Record (EHR): Thoroughly and appropriately documents actions, interventions and procedures in the medical record. Examples: Procedural notes and progress notes.
Work Schedule:Work Schedule: Full-Time or Part-Time or Intermittent* Rotating Shifts-May include nights, weekends, and holidays. NOTE: The salary listed represents full-time employment and will be prorated based on the actual number of hours worked each pay-period. Likewise, employees not working on a full-time basis will have benefits and time-off accrual prorated and based on their work schedule.
*Intermittent employment is defined as non-fulltime employment in which employees serve under an excepted or competitive service appointment without a regularly scheduled tour of duty. A position with an intermittent work schedule is sporadic and unpredictable so that a tour of duty cannot be regularly scheduled in advance. Intermittent positions offer health insurance only if the employee is expected to work at least 130 hours per month for at least 90 days.
**The TEMPORARY appointment will not exceed 1 year. This appointment may be renewed for additional service in accordance with Agency needs for 1 additional year. Temporary positions offer health insurance (if the employee is expected to work at least 130 hours per month for at least 90 days) but do not offer life insurance or retirement benefits and may be terminated at any time before the expiration date. The appointment to a Temporary position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.
Physical Requirements: The work involves extended periods of bending, standing and walking. Generally, the work requires recurring physical exertion with assisting patients.
The work requires a level of physical fitness that allows for standing for extended periods, heavy lifting to position patients, and manual dexterity to perform clinical procedures. The work will require recurrent bending, lifting, stooping, standing, squatting, stretching, sitting and walking.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Experience: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-6 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes documented experience obtaining patient health history, chief complaints, medication history, and identification of health related conditions that may impact the patient's health status; evaluating patients for emergent/non-emergent medical conditions; ordering and/or performing appropriate diagnostic studies (i.e. vital signs, EKG, etc.); performing interventions based upon patient symptoms and established protocols/standards; assisting in behavioral/psychiatric situations; and assisting Emergency Department Physicians with complex, specialized, and potentially-life threatening procedures; and administration of: Oxygen, Basic IV fluids, nebulized medications, limited PO meds, IM meds/immunizations/vaccines; independently recognized life threatening situations and act to correct these according to established national or facility protocols. Education: One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. (Transcripts Required)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: In addition to the experience or education above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
Practical knowledge of major body systems
Working knowledge of topographic anatomy
Working knowledge of diagnostic signs
Knowledge of protocol-approved list of medications
Working knowledge of emergency medicine techniques and emergency communication
Knowledge sufficient to understand the legal considerations of emergency medicine
Working knowledge of acute and chronic mental health conditions and crises
Preferred Qualification: Experience in the military as a Hospital Corpsman, Combat Medic, Medical Technician is highly desired.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).
