Summary

This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service, Field Organization, Northeast Area, US National Arboretum, Floral and Nursery Plants Research Unit, Washington, DC.

The incumbent serves as the curator of the US National Arboretum herbaria with primary responsibilities for managing, curating, and developing the herbaria collections,including the electronic database; and contributing to a vigorous collecting program, including wild and cultivated plants.

Duties

Help
  • Obtains and processes new specimen through collecting and loans.
  • Oversees digitization of the herbarium collections at the USNA, including digital asset management and web development.
  • Builds strategic partnerships with a wide range of national and international Herbaria, botanic gardens, and other organizations to acquire and curate new specimens.
  • Identifies, annotates, and verifies names on plants in the living collections and herbarium specimens. Validates and documents nomenclature.
  • Identify gaps (through discussions with users and collection identification) in the collection using various methods.
  • Writes technical reports, floristic updates, or articles in other peer-reviewed, technical, or trade journals.
  • Provides lectures, presentations, tours, and workshops to staff, volunteers, and the public to foster interest in plant systematics, taxonomy, and natural history collections.
  • Provides guidance and oversight to volunteers and temporary or contract employees and interns, visiting scientists, postdocs or graduate students.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements:

Degree: botany; or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany.

OR

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in botany or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education

AND

Specialized Experience:
Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

GS-12:
Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience managing, curating, or developing herbarium collections; assisting researchers or the public in the identification, classification and taxonomy of plants; and overseeing the digitization of an herbarium collection, including digital asset management and web development.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
