Duties

Help

As a Mathematical Statistician within the Upper Midwest Environmental Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Performs mathematical operations and statistical analyses by designing, developing, and/or applying a variety of statistical techniques, models, or methods to biological resources data. Collects, computes, and analyzes data.
  • Develops databases to support biological resource studies, utilizing SQL or NoSQL approaches, including database review, analysis, formulation, and management.
  • Performs statistical studies to identify, analyze, and report on biological data.
  • Provides technical assistance to all phases of data analysis and statistical interpretation, database management, and adaptation of machine learning techniques to novel applications.
  • Develops programs and applications written in R,SAS, SQL, NoSQL, Java, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and/or Python to ensure data may be access, loaded, verified, and exported.

First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

NOTE: If duty stationed in Honolulu, HI, the selectee will be entitled to a cost-of-living allowance of 10.28% in addition to the basic salary.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Mathematical Statistician, all grade levels.

A. Degree that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics.

B. Combination of education and experience -- at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

GS-11:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-11 level:

**Three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree in a directly related field of study or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.

**OR one year of appropriate professional experience that is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Examples of such experience may include independent responsibility in planning and carrying out routine work that includes applying mathematical and statistical concepts, principles, and methods to biological resources data and computerized statistical data analysis and model development; applying statistical or mathematical models to existing population-level modeling; writing and testing statistical programming languages such as R, Python, Stan, BUGS, or JAGS; assist in developing and implementing new statistical methods; performing work using version control software such as Git; performing work using multi-level/hierarchical/mixed-effect modeling; and preparing technical and scientific documents in support of model development efforts including, but not limited to, installation, standard operating procedures, and training materials. At this level, mathematical statisticians have the ability to independently perform moderately difficult and responsible scientific work.

**OR a combination of successfully completed graduate level education, as described above, that is beyond the second year of progressive graduate study and professional experience, as described above.

GS-12:

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement as described above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-12 level:

One year of appropriate professional experience that is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Examples of such experience may include planning and executing complex studies that involves applying mathematical and statistical concepts, principles, and methods to complex biological resources data and computerized statistical data analysis and model development; developing new statistical or mathematical models to existing population-level modeling; writing, testing, and troubleshooting programs written in major statistical programming languages such as R, Python, Stan, BUGS, or JAGS; developing and implementing new statistical model and algorithm; performing Network Analysis such as Bayesian networks or structural equation modeling; modifying or developing technical and scientific documents in support of model development efforts including, but not limited to, installation, standard operating procedures, and training materials. At this level, mathematical statisticians have the ability to independently perform scientific work of considerable difficulty.
