Summary

About the Position: Serves as a Range Communications Operator at Fort Carson, CO. Performing duties as a Ground/Air Activities Controller on a rotating 8 hour shift in a range control facility. Assisting in coordinating and scheduling of activities with those of the artillery, gunnery, and fixed range/training area to avoid scheduling conflicts for training. Coordinates with Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) personnel, Game Wardens, and range support personnel in accessing the safety range.

Duties

Help
  • Receives requests from and issues instructions to units conducting live ammunition firing on live-fire ranges, mortar points, artillery points, and troop training areas, and coordinates the safe entry and exit of personnel into active danger areas.
  • Issues detailed instructions and advisories to ground units conducting live fire exercises in order to avoid any possible misunderstanding of instructions by other units conducting separate fire missions located within other areas of R2601.
  • Clears range support, wildlife, EOD, and personnel taking into consideration weapons system firing, tactics and procedures utilized by ground units engaged in live-fire mission, surface vertical danger zones, and the area echo of artillery positions.
  • Receives, records, and relays requests for medical evacuation for casualties injured on the Fort Carson, ensuring required information is gathered quickly and relayed to Evacuation Detachment at Butts Field or Evans Army Hospital.

  • This position is inclement weather essential. This means that you must be willing to make every attempt to report for duty on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
  • Incumbent is subject to an irregular tour of duty to cover 24 hour-a-day, 7 days per week operation. All work performed within the first 40 hours is paid at the basic rate of pay....
  • ...CONT. Additional hours of officially ordered or approved work beyond the first 40 hours worked within the administrative workweek are overtime.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires rotating shifts to include working on weekend and/or holidays.
  • Continued employment in this position is subject to successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet/maintain these requirements may be grounds for termination.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain a Military Driver's License within 90 days upon start date.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes documented/demonstrated work that involves 1) assisting in controlling access to a live-fire range, ensuring that all personnel are accounted for and safe; 2) assisting in the management of safety data, ensuring that six digit coordinates are plotted onto a Military Installation map; and 3) relaying request for emergency support determining which ranges needs to be check-fired to ensure safety of personnel. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service GS-06.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
