THIS IS AN OPEN CONTINOUS ANNOUCEMENT WITH AN INITIAL CUTOFF DATE OF DECEMBER 15, 2020.

CUTOFF dates are as follows:

  • JANUARY 15, 2021
  • FEBRUARY 15, 2021
  • MARCH 31, 2021

ALJ conducts adjudicatory hearings and issues decisions for the Department of Labor under approximately 80 statutes and executive orders. These range from claims Involving Injuries under the Black Lung Benefits Act and the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act; disputes arising under environmental and "whistleblower" acts, such as Sarbanes-Oxley, the Federal Railroad Safety Act, and the Surface Transportation Assistance Act; Wage and Hour acts, such as the Davis-Bacon, Service Contract, and Fair Labor Standards Acts; "green-card" and labor-certification disputes arising under the Immigration and Naturalization Act; and miscellaneous government contract and grant-program disputes.

Major duties for this position include but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conducting legal research and analyzing policies, regulations, case law, and opinions.
  • Draft proposed decisions for the Judge's review and approval which systematically cover all of the legal points in the case and the rationale and the reasoning for the decision.
  • Preparing cases for hearing which require legal research and discussions of points of law to respond to motions or pleadings, to compel discovery.
  • Developing and drafting case decisions.
  • Responding to inquiries from attorneys regarding procedures, case statuses, and points of law.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualification Requirement: This position requires completion of a first professional law degree (LL.B or J.D.)

Applicants that are current law students who will graduate within three (3) months of this announcement closing are eligible to apply to the vacancy.


In addition to your transcripts applicants must also provide an unedited legal writing sample that is no more than ten (10) pages long with your application in order to receive further consideration.

Transcripts:  You must provide a copy of your law school transcript to be considered for this position. Verification of your academic degree(s) is necessary to determine your qualifications or eligibility for this position, you will be required to submit an official transcripts for verification purposes before you are hired. However, unofficial transcripts may be submitted during the application phase of the process. Please note that your J.D. or LL. B degree must be conferred before you can begin working.

Appointments as a Law Clerk are limited to 14 months during which time the appointee must be admitted in good standing to the bar of a court of general jurisdiction of a State, territory, or possession of the United States. Thereafter, the appointee may be converted to an Attorney-Advisor appointment with the possibility of an additional one-year extension.

Education

 A  LL.B or J.D. is a requirement for this position. If you do not submit sufficient academic documentation necessary to demonstrate that you meet the eligibility and minimum qualification requirements described in this announcement, your application will be deemed incomplete and you will be ineligible for further consideration for this vacancy.
