Duties

Help

As a Physicist, you will:

  • Serve as a recognized scientific authority and expert in the area of experimental particle physics.
  • Serve as a technical authority for the high energy physics research program.
  • Prepare narrative portions of the Office's budget relating to high energy physics.
  • Provides policy and scientific/technical advice and analysis to the supervisor relative to strategic planning for the purpose of establishing Office research goals in complex and evolving research areas.

Basic Requirements: Physics Series, 1310

  1. Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.

    or

  2. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.

In addition to the basic requirements, a qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service.


SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS 13 in the Federal service. 

Specialized experience for GS-14 level of this position is defined as:

  • Experience planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating high energy physics research programs and projects.
  • Experience developing and preparing analytical documents.
  • Experience preparing, justifying, and supporting office budgets.
  • Experience representing the Office on committees and at meetings.

In addition to the basic requirements, a qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service.

Specialized experience for GS-15 level of this position is defined as:

  • Experience serving as a program manager for high energy research programs.
  • Experience developing and preparing presentations, analytical documents, position papers, policy statements, communication strategies, and public documents on new developments and opportunities in high energy physics.
  • Experience negotiating, coordinating, and resolving highly complex or controversial scientific and technical issues related to the Office budget planning, defense and execution.
  • Experience determining scientific focus and direction for a high energy physics program by providing policy and technical advice regarding strategic planning for the Office program, particularly as it relates to communications, messaging, and relations with stakeholder communities.

  2. Ability to effectively communicate in writing to prepare analytical and public documents, presentations, position papers, and communication strategies sufficient to explain, defend, and justify recommendations to readers with varying levels of management responsibility and technical expertise
  3. Ability to negotiate, coordinate, and resolve highly complex or controversial scientific and technical issues related to the Office budget planning, defense and execution
  4. Ability to plan, direct, and evaluate new and highly complex basic research programs and policies
  5. Ability to effectively communicate orally to serve as spokesperson for the program, the office, the organization, and the agency in the broad scientific areas of responsibility.  This includes the ability to represent these areas on high visibility committees and planning activities.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
